born with head tilt

My female guinea pig had her babies today. She had four total but two were still born :'( One of the two that lived is normal but the other one has a really bad head tilt. it still moves just like the other one and nurses just fine but its head is always tilted. I cant seem to find anything about it but an ear infection. And I dont think that is possible since she was just born this morning. Does any one know what could cause this? Please help.

I'm so sorry they were still born..i know what thats like and it sucks.
as for the head tilt it maybe because shes just been born,if not then pop in to see a vet?
it may clear up,it may not but you can always get it checked,none of mine have had that thankfullky,it must be awful to see
congrats on the babies though
 
I think it is called wry neck rather than head tilt if they are born with it - it is a kind of birth defect.

As an aside I'm sure you know this already but please make sure Mummy is not bred from again as she has produced still borns and a baby with a defect.

sorry to hear about the babies you lost. it would be Worth getting the baby checked out and maybe on to some baytril. i have a 9 month old pig who was born with a cleft lip and strange eyes ;) as time went on he has become blind and suffered no end of infections. he had a head tilt and was put on baytril and recovered. a few months on he got another head tilt but this time no medication has helped him.

my vets at the time weren't the best and said they couldn't give me a reason apart from the fact it might be a birth defect. his head tilt was quite bad and kept knocking him of balance.

the vets said it was up to me wheather i wanted to keep him this way knowing he was prone to infections. well of course i was going to keep him, he was my baby :) his mother came from a pet shop pregnant and it was a shock as i was new to piggies and never intentended to breed.

he may look different and take that bit of extra care but he is great. things have changed since he got his tilt. he can't run as fast or jump like he use to. the good news is that he has learnt to adapt.

how you get on and what you find out 8) interested in anything that might help him.

Yes please try to see a vet asap, it's safer this way, make sure they know about exotics.
Can you tell everyone where you are from, they can advise on a vet in your area that know all about guinea's.

hi Maria so sorry about the still born babies but this happens in perfectly normal pregnancys with a good background anyway , its the way it goes and why breeding any animals is always a worry,
I have a paralised pig he was fine until about 6 weeks ago hes 4, he was born here and is my gentle darling Jinx he cannot walk properly but I have NO intention of giving up on him, he is not in pain which is the main consideration, just becasue they are not normal to me makes them extra special, and am so glad to ehar you wont be giving up on him, maybe they wry neck will get better as he gets older and strronger, it could even be the way he was in the womb and time would hopefully make a big difference, dont forget the piccys
 
momma will not be bred again. I wanted babies from her and got them. I knew when I bred her that I was going to keep all babies wether she had 1 or 10. So thats why I bred. Her mate died shortly after she got pregnant anyways. So no worries there. the babe seems to be a little straighter today. Its head is still tilted but not as much. The vet said that it was probably from the way she was in the womb and it may go all the way straight or stay slightly tilted but there is nothing wrong with her internally. Thank god. I will keep you all updated on any and all changes. Thank you all so much for your advice and thoughts.

I think the babe will be just fine as he gets older he will get stornger, if not then hes an extra special package ;)
 
its head is almost straight now. When it gets tired its starts tilting but for the most part it is straight. I am so relieved it is ok. Now if only I knew if it was a him or her I hate calling it it. Thank you all so much for your replys they all helped so much.

What a little champion, should be able to tell soon there was a thread on here not long ago about sexing, look it up it may help you :)
