In the not too distant future (hopefully!) we will be moving and might mean we have room for more piggies!

I currently have two boars who live next to each other (can touch through bars) but not together due to a fall out a couple of years ago. Reggie is just over 3.5 years old and Chunk is around 4. Reggie was the one who came off worse as he has a ripped ear because of the disagreement and Chunk is very dominant/opinionated. I think Reggie would love a little friend but do bossy boars ever get on with anyone? I have only stuck to keeping them separate due to space but if we have the space, I would love to adopt them some friends!

Hi!

Most boars fall out with each other during the teenage months when hormones are at an all time high; after that, the testosterone output will gradually decrease and eventually pretty much fizzle out. Many an unbondable terror of the piggyways at a rescue has ended being a perfect 'uncle boar' for taking on freshly separated baby boars and looking after them until they could be dated with single/bereaved boars coming to the rescue to look for a new friend of their choice.

Older boars generally much easier to bond, whether that is a youngster or another adult. There are a range of good guinea pig rescues that offer dating for single boars of all ages to find the perfect and perfectly compatible companion for your two boars.
Rescue dating means that you come home with a new companion only if acceptance has happened. The Rolls Royce version of it is 'full' or residential bonding where your boy is introduced to a number of candidates over a number of days (on average it takes 1-3 piggies for a successful bond) and for as long as it takes to make sure that the two boys have settled well and solidly together. A bond forged this way is as stable as a sow bond.
The oldest single boar I know of to find his first ever companion this way was 6 years old, and a very happy chap he was!

Thank you Wiebke, I will definitely go down the route of boar dating at a local rescue if we don’t try and find them some buddies. I want to make sure it works out this time!

Please note that anybody can call themselves a rescue (or a breeder) without licensing and supervision and the result can be accordingly.
Our recommended rescue link lists the carefully vetted rescues that we can vouch for that any piggies are in good and safe hands at all stages of the process; we can't vouch for any others.

Yes I know some are not what they say! 😬 We are only half an hour away from Neville’s Nest so will get in touch with them when the time comes 😊

I have adopted a couple of piggies from them myself. :)

Good place that does quite a bit of boar dating, which used to be a real problem in this area in years past. :tu:
