Hi we have 2 guinea pigs that we got in March, at which point they were 10 months old.
Today I have found them both dead in their hutch. No sign of any injury, just lying completely stiff and motionless.
They appeared absolutely fine yesterday, squeaking for their food as usual and scurrying about.
They are in a secure garden and had only eaten the same food as always, same hay as always and the grass.
Just don’t understand what has happened! My 7yr old doesn’t knew yet, he’s going to be heartbroken 😔

Hi and welcome

I am ever so sorry. Piggies can die from fright if their hutch is tackled by a predator or even if a mouse is getting into it - and anything you can stick a pencil through a mouse get through, too. It is more likely to be an environmental factor that has caused the sudden death of both piggies at the same time rather than illness or even eating something poisonous, which is not instant in either case.

Has the hutch been protected against the rain/cold? Or is it under cover in a space where could be noxious fumes/gas? Guinea pigs have only small and narrow airways and are much more sensitive than we humans.

Unfortunately we can only guess as much as you do. You can ask a vet for a post mortem examination in the hope that their death may have left some visible traces, but there is no guarantee.

Please take the time to read our bereavement guide; we have also included a chapter with resources and tips for how to tell any children of yours depending on their age.
