Burt quite often gets little tufts of hay / bedding etc stuck in his nethers so we check him a few times a day. But last night he had a little bit of fluff hanging from his bum - when we pulled it out it was followed by a mass of stuff, it looked like mostly hair (even though he is pretty short haired) with half a pellet stuck in it and was about an inch long :o poor Burt. He hadn't shown any signs of discomfort, eating and pooping as normal. My questions are:
anyone else had this? what the heck was it? what can I do to stop it happening again? and would it have caused him problems if we hadn't been there to pull it out (just thinking in case we go away and have relatives looking after him)? Thank you for your help. Gaynor and Burt.

Hello

That all sounds normal for a boar, they have a remarkably elastic anal sac which can accommodate a surprising amount of 'excess baggage'. As long as there is no excessive discharge or clumps which he is unable to pass, and his poops are normal then there is little worry about. As part of their daily checks a quick feel of the bottom to see if there is a clump forming is worthwhile (it would feel like a marble between the testicles).

This link explains the maintenance of problematic bottoms well.

All my boys are a bit like this, i just check them when they come out for the veg sometimes i'm really surprised by the lengths of hay etc. that comes out !

It's completely normal, Tufty is a year old and gets a build up of hair and creamy gunge which I clean out like in the video that Suzy mentioned.
