heatherspigs

Really would appreciate some consumer help on this one and any advice on new pigs.

Took my daughter into our local pet shop which i have used for years and they have always been friendly and helpful. They had two rosetted male piggies (about 14 weeks old they did not know exactly as the lady who owned the shop was away) When we looked at them one seemed itchy and had an open sore on his back. The lady said oh I'll get he breeder to lokk a thim and get back to you I can't sell him. I thought good thats what they should say all very correct. The next day they phone saying the owner of the shop has looked at him but can't see any mites but they have treated him with some powder anyway, they think the other one has hurt him. I said will pick up next week, want to make sure got cage and run etc etc.

Went to pick them up and the poor thing is on it's back rolling and has 2 bald sore bits that I could see. I showed them to the lady (not owner) and she said well i'll leave you with them (she was busy at till and only one in). I waited for my mum to pop into shop as she used to breed them years ago. She said straight away it's got carentila (not how it's spelt but hopefully you can work it out) it needs to go to the vets. The lady in the shop did not say anything. I could not bear to leave it there as it had been a week of ithcing that I knew of. So we said right then we will take it to the vets is thats ok? She said yes we will hear from you later. Had to wait until after 6 for vet as no appointment. Vet says got bad infestation as it has had a treatment we will inject it cost £23.75! I popped receipt in to the shop the next day for refund (pigs cost £30) just been phoned by owner to say she is not refunding as she would have taken it to the vets! I pointed out she had a week to cure it and hadn't and she had not sold me a healthy animal she would not budge. I still have to go back for another check up at my vets so my costs are not even over. he seems better but hard to tell as both have not been handled and hate it, they shake in your arms. When I pop them in their run they run into their tube or log cabin and just hide. Neither are eating much but I do not know how much they eat. I gave them one carrot top today and they ate that with relish but when i gave them more they just hid.

Questions are:

1. Where do i stand with the vets bill, I paid by credit card so I could cancel the payment with the card compnay as goods are techically faulty?

2. Any suggestions how to bring nibbles and sooty out of their total fear and reassure them? They are such lovely things but no talking yet. Are we handling too soon? Bought home late Tues after vets, now sat still very timid?

Thank you to anyone who helps me!

Hi Heather, welcome to the forum. I am sorry your new pigs have come to you in such a condition, and that you are having difficulties with the pet shop you bought them from. Unfortunately I am unable to suggest anything in regards to handling the pet shop/vet bill ordeal, but I do hope it is resolved soon.

The condition sounds like mites, which are invisible to the naked eye. A fungal infection is also possible. I am unsure what "carentila" could be, can't think of anything that sounds like that but will rack my brains for a bit.

It is very normal for guinea pigs to be very frightened in the early days -take a look at this topic for some advice on how to settle new piggies: http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=36239

Hi, welcome on here!

I can't say anything about the refund situation, but good on you for getting those poor boys out of there! I hope that they are recovering well from their mites or fungus infection. DOn't know what your mother meant, either!

Give Nibbles and Sooty time to settle, they have obviously been through a lot of misery. I've written a thread about how to settle new guinea pigs. Especially piggies that have never been really handled before, will take some time and patience to come round. http://theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=36239

I have adopted a couple of abys myself on Tuesday, and both are still extremely shy (but then I rehomed them for that reason, so I'm not upset).

I am looking forward to seeing pictures of your boys. Abys are my favourite breed!

AWW Bless them! I am so pleased too that you got them out there.

Hope the vets injection helps them. There's a place on the internet called Gorgeous Guineas that has photos of all the skin issues to help you identify what yours have. Also they sell creams to ease the itching. Have a look to see if it helps.

As for shyness, they will come round. My guineas have been very very shy but all are coming round slowly. I think you have waited long enough for handling too - I am minding some guineas and they shake in your arms, I think they are so afraid due to lack of human contact and am hoping they stop shaking some time soon.

Good luck and well done again. If you take any photos - post them, i'd love to see them.

I believe that goods bought by credit card have to cost a minimum of £100 to be covered by the credit card warranty, so no help on that from the cc company.

Thanks

Thank you to everyone who has responded, i have phoned the credit card people but will have to phone during the working week. Hopefully I can cancel the transaction and then i will write a letter explaining why I have cancelled how disappointed i am with their atittude and a cheque for the balance (costs of purchase minus vets bills) I want to ensure that I have paid something so they are legally mine.

Now, handling advice.......We handled them too soon now realise this, today we are out most of the day we have fed them some fresh food and thankfully for the first day most is already gone so they are now eating. heather has dutifully hand picked all the poos and clumps of wet shavings- nice! So their cage is ready for inspection (sorry ex forces!). Should we just talk with them for a few days and not pick them up having already picked them up previously? Or should we continue to handle. If so how long each go is small amount of time several times a day best or two long handles? Poor things I also need to check them over for hair loss. whilst one has been treated for mites the other showed no signs so the vet did not treat him but he has a couple of bald patches where the fur circles if you know what i mean. not sure if this is how he always was, no sore spots that can see but all black is harder to spot that on nibbles who has white bits!

We have them in a large cage in the barn closed over wth door but ther is one small window quite dark for them but warm and safe from terrier and foxes we live in a remote village.

Sorry to be such a numpty thanks in advance what a helpful lot you are!
