Hi all,

We have sadly lost our oldest sow, Sheldon at almost 6 years old. As sad as we are our thoughts are now with he cagemate Bernie (Bernadette).

We have a lone neutered rescue boar, Piggo, who we had initial tried to bond with our oldest bereaved boy Howie but this failed. We then tried him with our trio of girls. Piggo was delighted but the oldest of the 3 girls was having none of it so sadly Piggo was left alone again.

Now that Bernie is alone we are attempting to bond him with her. She has just 5 and he is about 18 months we think.

They are currently in a neutral bonding pen. They have briefly eaten hay together but Piggo is VERY enthusiastic about the partnership and seems to be annoying Bernie with his passionate advances. She is mostly running away from them and is talking at him and telling him off... but occasionally she is chattering her teeth at him which leads him to take offence and chatter back. Then they go their separate ways until his hormones take over again and he seeks her out for another passionate humping advance!

Does this sound like a bonding that may still work? Do I let them figure it out or is this one doomed to failure? Any tips on how to progress (or not!)

Poor Piggo...I'm determined to find him a friend. He is so sweet and I've never known a pig popcorn so much!

Another update! 3 hours in. Piggo seems to have stopped harassing and Bernie is no longer complaining at him. Current status is that they've found a way to burrow under a towel and are bow laid together, quietly and peacefully. Does this mean success? Would really appreciate advice!

Also, I have 2 possible homes for this new pairing if it is a success. Which would you advise is best?

We one half of a large c&c which Piggo was in...the other side is occupied by 5 year oldun-neutered boar Howie (Still looking for his new soul mate 🤞)

Or one half of an even bigger c&c on the other side of which is a trio of sows.

Which would be the least unsettling for the new pair do you think?

It sounds good to me. The bonding doesn't sound like it has got anywhere near the line at any point as the behaviours have been all in the mild to medium range.

Sows that take the leadership will not allow to be dominance mated; this means that Piggo will be kept at paw's length until she is ready for sexual mating at the end of her first season.

I would put the sow group in the middle. That gives Howie plenty of interaction, and one of the sows may even decide that she likes him... Just cable-tie the divider so Howie cannot get through.

Thank you! I really value your advice so much! They've woken up a bit now and Piggo is just ridiculously happy.. he is the popcorn king and he's certainly showing Bernie his best moves! He's gone in for some more humping and Bernie is just moving away and telling him off but no teeth chattering anymore and certainly no nips or aggression. And in fact they are side by side eating hay right now! ❤
