MY male guinea pig has a closed but still almost new wound. I believe he got it from the place he was at before he was with me. He also has matted hair on his back from what I'm guessing is sprayed pee. he has chunks out of his ear also. He came from a pretty rough start. should I take him to the vet even if he is recovering fine? Also, how would one help with matting?

Considering your boy has had a rough start, I would pop him along to the vet for an MOT as he may need antibiotics to prevent that wound from becoming infected.
They can also sort out that mat whilst you are there :)

Any problems whatsoever with my piggies and I'm at the vet. Taking along a new piggy for a vet check is always a good idea anyway.

Hi! Please always have any new guinea pig not in a good state/from a bad background vet checked! Especially one with still healing wounds.

Cut off the worst of the mats with a finger in between the skin and the scissors. If necessary get somebody else to hold him. Please also check his boar bits thoroughly.
Then you give him a bath (with shampoo, please) and afterwards, once he is dry or on the following day if he is very freaked out, you address the deeper sitting mats as gently and as much as you can. That is what rescues do. The hair will grow back even in short-haried piggies.
Bathe him in a bowl that is sitting on a towel either on the shower ot bathtub floor, so he can't injure himself if blind jumps, but cannot escape.

Use piggy whispering tips to reassure him and to praise him (or apologise if it is uncomfortable) all the time; keep up a flow of constant chatter. Try not make any sudden movements if you can avoid that.

I agree with the others.
A vet check is always a good plan.
Good for you taking on a piggy who has suffered.
I’m sure that with your care he will recover and have a good life

Completely agree with everyone else. An MOT will be fab for him and help him on his recovery plus spot any problems before they get worse.
