Hi everyone,

This is a strange/embarrassing one but I'd love to know what people think.

One of my pairs of guinea pigs hump each other a lot! They are both over 4 years old, I've had Tiger for over four years/all his life, and he used to live in a trio with two of my older boars until they died but he had a brotherly dynamic with them.

When he was left alone at the end of September after the death of my favourite guinea pig, he got really depressed so we adopted Harry from a lovely lady who had taken wonderful care of him.

They LOVE each other. They sleep in the same hut, spend every moment next to each other, and have had no issues bonding. They were living in a 5x4 C&C with 1x5 hayloft but I had to move them out my bedroom into a 3x5 C&C with a 1x3 hayloft because they were keeping me awake all night with their, erm, night time activities! They are perfectly happy in the slightly smaller space- they aren't as active as my younger pairs and trio.

My question is, is it common/normal for them to have a boyfriend dynamic... all my other pairs and trios of boars have had a brotherly type dynamic but not these two! I'd say Tiger is the slightly more dominant of the two but both hump each other. It doesn't bother either of them or me, and they are besotted with each other, I'm just interested to know if this is a common dynamic between boars! 😂

Humping is all part of normal dominance behaviour. Sometimes one humps and another rumbles. It sounds like their relationship is quite balanced in terms of dominance, if that makes sense. They are probably just really well bonded and like each other a lot. Be glad 🙂

Our boys don’t hump each other, but they do love to spend time together lying next to each other and eating with each other, I just take it as a good thing that they are best mates!

Your boars sound like they have a good bond.
Please remember that humping isn't always a sexual behaviour - it is more often used as an expression of dominance to establish and enforce a hierarchy.

Oh wow, I love Bill and Ted! 😍
Thanks for all your replies everyone, it doesn't bother me at all but I was just interested as out of all the 13 boars I've had, these two are the only ones who have continued humping after the initial bonding period so I just wondered about it. When I got my first guinea pig his friend there was a lot of it initially but then never again, maybe these two are just different!
Thanks again everyone as always!

Thanks Bill and Ted were wonderful piggies, sadly both have now gone over the Rainbow Bridge, but they had such a happy relationship x

Comet and Blitzen were like this. They even got themselves stuck in a tunnel that wasn't big enough for both side by side (there was one big enough in the cage too, the dolts), because hey, fleece tunnel sharing! Sounds like you've got yourself a great personality match there
