Hi guys,

I am going to be getting 2 piggies once i have come back from my holiday and was wondering whether it is better to have two boys or two girls?

When i was younger i had two boys, but sadly two became one very quickly as the other one sadly died a couple of months after i got them, so i have only really had experience of looking after one piggie on its own.

Would really like your opinions on this :))

Depends on the pigs!

I find my boys enjoying 'muttering' much more than thee girls they will always tell you a story and they do appear to be less highly strung than my girls, and complain less. If you opt for boys make sure you provide lots of space and two of everything to prevent fallout's get a well bonded adult pair of a rescue as they are unlikely to fallout!

Girl's fallout less than boys but there is always the exception. Girls you can add to easier on most occasions where as boys are best kept in pairs.

If I was to get two piggies tomorrow, I would get an older pair of bonded boys as I do find boys have bigger personalities and are more accepting. My girls are constantly giving me into trouble!

Where are you based - we could put you in touch with a rescue and then your can meet, greet and swoon over the piggies!

I'm sure it's all down to personality. In my personal experience I've only had a couple of girls and all the rest have been boys and I've had a much better bond with them. Again, this is my personal experience.
If you visit a rescue just see which piggies you seem to 'click' with tho, let the piggies choose you ;)

Hi, I'm in ottery st mary in devon. I have looked on the rspca website for exeter which is the closest i know of, but all theirs have been reserved :(, but hey i need to wait until june because I'm going on holiday for two weeks and dont want to get the piggies and then leave them, so maybe they will have more in then.

I would go for boys if I was getting them again, I wouldn't change my lot for the world but two females in January 2011 quickly became 3 females and a neutered male by August :)) just too tempting to keep adding new members hehe

I've had both, my girls are far more reserved but vocal, whereas the boys have been full of character and into everything. Whether boy or girl, they all sing and wheek their little lungs out come nom nom time! :)) :)) :))

Piggy trains can also be arranged if a rescue renew's nationally which means people can help with some of the journey so do keep an eye on the rehoming boards. Your best rehoming from a reputable rescue so you have rescue support for life should you have any questions or need help with your new piggies! x

Haha. A very good point. xx>>>

From what i've seen so far I'm thinking two boys from a rescue will be a good way to go.

Thanks for your help with this guys :))

Ps - I don't think Little Brambles keeps her website up to date so best contact to find out if she has any piggies looking forever homes! x

Hi and welcome!

Great that you are doing your research first and that you are considering rescue - the best place to get well bonded, healthy and guaranteed not pregnant piggies from!

Please be aware that boars ideally need more space - we recommend 2x5 ft instead of the RSPCA minimum 2x4 ft recommendation that rescuing from a reputable rescue requires. It is always advisable to speak to a rescue first before getting accommodation, as requirements can vary according to rescue.

There are also several good rescues around Bristol. Forum rescues and supporters are currently trying to build up a map of recommendable rescues; this link shows you a map of them.

My Bart and Bella were like that. Bart was castrated, but they were brother and sister. ;)

Cross gender pairs are great (I have had them, and now have groups of sows with one neutered boar each), but they are not that common in rescues, and by far not all rescues have a boar neutering policy. A properly bonded same sex pair works just as well!
