boys or girls

No, you can house two boars together (but generally not more than two). I have my two boys sat next to me right now as it happens.

Boars tend to need two of everything and more space than sows in order to get along. It's easiest if you can find a bonded pair - there are plenty in rescues - as then you're less likely to have problems with fallouts as they get older.

If you look in the behaviour section there's plenty of information on both boars and sows. :)

with boars you need to remember 'two's company, three's a crowd' - they generally work best in pairs or groups bigger than 4

Yep 3 is definately a croud for boars! It gives to much scope for someone to be left out. I've only ever had boars since i started owning piggies (15 years roughtly) and i've never had a boy who couldnt be found another male friend. It's far more based on personality than gender :)

I have a pair of boars :-)

Piggiepigpigs on youtube has a trio and a pair

Lots of bonded pairs of boys here too (and I even had a trio at one time, but unless you are extremely experienced and have tons of space I wouldn't recommend it!) I think that one of the key things about keeping boys happy is space and lots of it.:) My boys have the odd spat every now and then, but generally speaking they get on really well.

I've had two trios in the past, but all three boars each time were EXTREMELY non-dominant so all got along perfectly.

What is vital for a stable boar bond is character compability. You won't get that if you just go to a shop or a breeder and buy two youngsters for their looks! Try to chuck two "pretty" kids together and stuff them into the box room all the time and see what happens...

If you go to a good guinea pig rescue, however, and rehome a carefully bonded pair of boars, you will have lots and lots of joy - boars are generally more laid back and cuddlier than sows. They can also be rebonded again at any age at a good rescue that takes the time and care. Rehoming from a reputable rescue includes that only healthy animals are rehomed and that you get support and advice during the settling in period as well as recourse during the animals' lives.

Plenty of space is also crucial - if you stick two hormonal youngsters in a too small shop cage, you can guarantee problems!

The bad press is not down to the boars, but people not bothering to put in the necssary time and care and doing their homework!

Just have a look at these threads to bust the myth:

Not true. Boy pairs can work fine. Its a question though of matching personalities correctly. Rescues can bond pairs quite successfully.

As said before three can be a crowd if you don't have enough space and experience.

Yes I pair all my boars up by personality, I don't even really bathe them together any more, as I know if they don't tolerate each other at all then there's no point...if it's borderline then I'll go the full hog and pair them properly, but I normally do a test meeting first, just to get an impression of personalities...I wouldn't recommend anyone do that though! I have quite a few pigs (around 30) and lots of experience!

I have a father/son duo that get along famously. I think it's all based on the personality of the piggie themselves as to whether or not they will get on in a pair though. I think part of the reason that my two guys are compatible is that I introduced the baby gradually to his father over a period of the first few weeks of his life and then moved him in permanently at three weeks old. I've been keeping a close eye on them, as I'm concerned about dominance issues arising as my Nigel (the baby) is approaching 6 months in age, but so far so good. His mother and sisters and other female cage mate squabble more so than the boys to be honest!

I have a pair of boars who are so bonded- just look at some of my videos. They share everything, bottle, dish, bed. I think boars are stunning. :))

I am really pleased you can have two Bours together.
in the past i have had bores but on there own and the last lot of piggies i had were 3 sow's in the same cage, forgive me if i am wrong but i found the boars to be more funny and cheeky which is why i was thinking of having boars.

How many times have i spelt boars wrong? haha
