All of a sudden my 7 month old boar Shakey has been doing a really weird thing of sort of moving is head oddly like something is trying to get him and then walking backwards, i dunno if he has anything wrong with his brain or something? none of my other 6 do this and he has only started doing it in the past week..it looks odd he's still happy and eats well, runs around etc just very odd he keeps doing this funny head thing ive checked his ears and made sure his whiskers are not bothering him as he has whiskers close to his eyes..any idea what it might be?

It might be an ear infection (you won't be able to see it, it's right inside the ear) which is throwing his balance off. I would see a vet.

I agree,it could quite well be an infection either in the ear or the jaw.As he is eating o.k. most likely an ear problem. The other possibility is that he keeps getting something stuck on his teeth.Certainly best to get his ears examined by a vet. Mary

oh right, i'll book him an appointment for sometime this week then, thanks

ive just remeber its only started happening since we gave him a bath..my mum did shakey i told her not to get any in his ears, is it possible he could have water in his ears and that irritating him? i'll still take him vet its just a possibility?

i'd also aggree that it sounds like something to do with the ear! oh, poor hun, hope he's better soon! sending him lots of love! :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :-*

definite possibility :) Yes, still vet though, water might have just triggered it off?

ah right yeah, i'll tell the vet when i go then might take duke and get him checked to make sure no infection has spread to him, is it possible for him to get it?

i don't know. i suppose it could spread... take him along just in case! :)

havent been yet..ive got no money and its absoloutly chucking it down has been all day and ive got like a mile to walk so I'm gunna ask my bf to take me down one night..he seems to have stopped doing the weird thing but i'll still get him checked maybe tomorrow or wednesday :)

I would definitely get him to the vet asap because the damage can become permanent if a bad ear infection is left untreated. I've seen many piggies with head tilts because of this.

I dont know if i was over-reacting..he isnt doing it anymore, when he did it he did it for ages and now he doesnt do it at all, I'm thinking maybe he got a bit of water in his ears or something from the bath he had?

I havent taken him to the vets yet, i'll ring them later when they open and book an appointment for tonight hopefully if not i'll try for tomorrow.

My sid had what you are describing and it was worse at first but then got a bit better, i still took him to the vets and he had treatment for a middle ear infection. After a couple of wheeks the ear infection went but he is still left with a head tilt which i perminant. When he gets himself worked up like when i try and cut his nails he wobbles about all over the place :smitten:

aww..ive just called the vets and got an appointment for both boys to be seen, just incase he does have an infection i want to make sure duke hasnt caught it, were going in about half an hour with them so i'll let u know how i get on when i get back :)

Back from the vets - that vet was rude and rather arrogant!

He saw shakey and I told him his symptoms, he said he couldn't see any discharge or anything and couldnt really make a prognosis because he looked fine but said if it is an inner ear infection he wouldnt be able to see anything so he said he would give him anti-biotics for a week and hope it sorts it.

so he gave him a 0.4ml baytril injection and gave me a weeks worth of baytril to give to him, he had to get his book out to read up info on giving it to him and how much etc..I expect a vet to know that really.

afterwards my mum asked him about the tortoise and if their was a reptile vet at the branch we use anyway in his convo he implied that people who go to the vets dont look after their animals properly to start off with! i thought he was directing it at me..my mum thinks he was saying basically get the husbandry right and your in good sted..but i think he made out like i wasnt looking after them properly..anyway useless vet, really made me think about using the same vets again, I certainly wont be seeing him if I do.

he also forgot to tell me not to give him the night dose of baytril tonightoo, luckily i hadnt left the surgery and he popped his out the door to tell me..what if id have come home and given it to him! id have over dosed my poor lil man and killed him..I'm thinking of putting a complaint in I'm not happy at all.

Do not go to this vet again. He not only knows nothing about piggies,he does not care either. His attitude to you was disgraceful.I think you should indeed make a fuss and report him to the RCVS.

What area do you live in,maybe someone on the forum will know of a good vet in your area, because it is very important that you find one.

It is probably best to continue with the antibiotic just in case there is an infection, but I think it qiuite possible that the piggy had something stuck on his teeth at the back of the mouth. Mary

i'm with Maryh don't go back to him and if you feel that strongly ight a letter of complaint to tell him why.
there are good piggie vets out there unfortunately it can take a while to find them first vet i ever saw with one of my GP's ended up killing my poor piggie as he got the ivemec dose wrong!
so it is really important to find a vet you are comfortable with and knows what they are doing.
hope shakey feels better soon :smitten: :smitten:

thanks..well i havent seen him shake/tily his head or lose his balance which is good! he's still as lively as ever etc so I'm hoping there was no infection, he seems fine with thi-biotics, the vets is a branch of surgeries which has multiple vets so you dont see the same one everytime you go, theres a young woman vet there who's lovely with the small animals and talks to them etc and knew how to hold them, was gentle and careful etc she so far has been the best vet ive seen..i dont know what the vet was called this time I went, but if i need to go again i'll just make sure the woman is in who is good with guinea pigs
