Quickly been reading an RSPCA book entitled 'Care for your Guinea Pig'. It intimates that wholemeal bread and bran are OK to feed the piggies as along as they are given as a mash made with hot or cold milk or water. Apparently "....this cereal compensates for the seeding grasses they would eat in the wild and should be fed twice a day" ?

Just curious as to whether I should try this or avoid at all costs and as you lovely people :) on here are so helpful I felt you were the best people to ask

Thanks in advance

I dont think thats needed at all...

Your piggies should get everything they need from their dry mix and veg :)

It's not something I would do, sounds like too much hard work but if the RSPCA are saying it then you must be able to do it. As PP said Veggies, dried food and of course hay should be enough.

I was just curious as to whether it wud be worth tryin or of any additional nutritional value

I think its something you may want to do if a piggy is under the weather, but otherwise, I wouldnt bother :)

cheers to everyone ;D

I knew you were the ones to check it up with ;)

Thanks

My friend gives this to her piggys with warm milk in the winter to warm there little bellies up not tried it myself but my girls live inside and the boys in the shed :)

hi, yeah ive heard of doing this in winter to keep them warm..my girls live in the shed and it gets really cold in there but ive never given them warm food i just provide more ways of keeping them warm with blankets, and a mini heater etc :)

I thought they weren't allowed milk :-\ Does it have to be a certain type of milk or can it be cows milk?

My piggies are indoors and are only 8 weeks so I wasn't thinkin of giving it yet anyway but obviously read it and as much as I appreciate the RSPCA's advice I'd much rather back up any statement with other evidence Hence the post

Really appreciate the info peeps O0

I've heard that piggies have a lactose intolerance Good point Kelly

Piggies should not be given bread and milk or bran.

I do give my pigs(those that like it) some dry wholemeal or granary bread, about twice a week.,but it is not a necessary part of the diet.

I read a copy of the RSPCA gp care book once, and it went straight in the wastepaper basket>.

The RSPCA are needed to conbat animal cruelty and to rescue abandoned animals, but they are not pet care experts, and remember that the vets and people that write their books and info sheets, are not ecperts with any particular animal. They are general vets who give their spare time to helping the charity.

The RSPCA are good when it comes to combattin cruelty I totally agree

Havin read the book I have to say that I was not very impressed with it myself easy readin for kids but not sure I'd use it as a regular reference book

Thanks again
