Hi friends!

I've just got two male pups and they're very skittish, I've been doing as much research as I can to make sure they're happy in their new home, but I'm getting confused about the right way to go get them used to being handled. At the pet shop I was told to get handling them straight away, but this just seems to stress them out, so I've not tried to handle them since and am just slowly getting them used to hand-feeding. Am I doing the right thing, or should I be handling them? 😓 Sorry if that seems really ignorant, I'm just so in love with them and don't want to accidentally traumatise them but I also don't want to be accidentally slowing down their social skills! Any advice you can is more than welcome ❤
 
Hey! First of all congratulations for your new piggies❤❤❤❤ as much as I know u should probably let them be on their own for 3-4 days and let them get comfortable in their new surroundings and after that u can start handling them and eventually cuddling them❤
 
Hello and welcome.
I recommend that you give them time to settle in. They need to get used to their environment and to each other. It may take them quite some time before they become used to being handled, but you do need to be aware that guinea pigs are prey animals and some piggies will never like being touched and being picked up cuts very close to their prey instincts.

I have also attached some information specific to keeping boars and our cage size guide. It is essential that boars have a large cage measuring at least 150cm x 60cm. Too small of a cage when they hit the teenage months (4-14 months) can result in them falling out.

Please also ensure that you check the sex of them yourself. Pet shop missexing is very common and then resulting in unexpected pregnancies.

Hello and welcome. Please let your boys settle in for at least 24 hours before starting handling etc. It would do them good if you could cover a part of their cage so they have somewhere to hide.

Talk to them as you approach their cage (predators don’t let their presence known), so they can get used to your voice. For now just put the veggies and hay in and leave them to it. Don’t be baffled if they don’t take it from your hand. Remember they’ve been used to where they were. Now they’ve been moved and have to get used to their new home/environment, smells and sounds.

Thank you all SO much! I'll definitely be readinh through those guides, my cage is big but only has one bit of cover so I'm thinking I'll get another incase they need some hiding time appart. They have settled a lost since I let them be so I'll just keep feeding and talking to them and let them get used to me on their own terms. Me makes me a lot less anxious about needing to handle them, so thank you, I will send pics once they're more settled ❤❤❤ I'll be back soon! XXXXX
 
Is it a ferplast one with a plastic shelf/hide? I’d remove that and just give them hides.
 
It is yeah, I'll do that then, I preffer tye idea of a more natural hide for them X
 
And it’s 150cm or more? The inside length.
