can pigs eat bread at all? I assume it lacks much in terms of nutrients but do they enjoy it and is it harmful?

No they cannot. They must never eat anything processed.

Rats have a digestive system more like ours whereas guinea pigs have one that's highly specialised and relies on fermentation to gain nutrients owing to their largely poor nutritional value natural diet (hay etc. - they digest it more than once to get all the nutrients out)
