Sorry another random one...I visited a petting zoo a while ago and was not happy with the care of the small animals, particularly the guinea pigs. The hutches were dirty and fly ridden and they had very poor quality veg and mainly bread!

I did write to them (and I mentioned it to someone there who was disinterested) and just now (5 weeks later!) got a response where they say that under RSPCA guidelines bread is a treat for guinea pigs!

Is this correct, I am sure its not but stand to be corrected....

I don't know about it being a treat, but when I throw it on the lawn for the birds, my lot chase the birds and eat it themselves!

Do they! Thats funny, I can just imagine it now! I just had it in my head that they should not have it as it causes bloat. Maybe i am wrong then?

It does say in the RSPCA guidelines that they can have wholemeal bread....Frankly mine are fat enough as it is so they wont be getting any!

Its a little annoying when the RSPCA say its OK. I am going to write back to them but I know they will just quote the RSPCA to me. The RSPCA does not say stinky, dirty hutches are good for them though!

Hopefully someone can give me a scientific reason I can use. I must admit though anything yeasty must not be good surely?

BossHog your guineas clearly have the human trait that anything not healthy is extremely tasty and must be eaten at all costs (like chocolate for humans LOL!) (mine would no doubt be the same!)

I've had a little read around and a few of the books I have mention giving wholemeal bread "as a treat" or for pregnant /nursing sows.

However, I would have thought that giving something as a treat would mean giving it in such small quantities that it goes straight away.

Personally , I agree with piggyfan - my guinea pigs get different types of hay as a treat - plus their favourite veggies .

I totally disagree with giving guinea pigs bread. They need a natural diet and should not have flour, yeast or wheat.

I don't give them it - they steal it from the wild birds!

If you could see them wobble as they chase the birds - you're probably right! :))

Years ago, back in the dark ages of guinea pig care, we used or give stale bread to guinea pigs. Bread used to have less preservatives in it and would go rock hard, I think it was to help with them gnawing on it? There were no toys etc back then for them to chew on!

It is not something I have fed in the last 30 years......

I would never have thought if giving them bread!?!

Even ducks aren't supposed to eat bread! I did know it's not very good for them, but we now have notice up at our park! Can't remember the wording, basically you'll be in trouble if you feed bread!
