Breathing Difficulties

I googled the drug because I had never heard of it being given to a guinea pig. I think maybe it means a large dose but I do worry about side effects. It may be fine, but couldn't ignore it and then feel bad if your guinea pig died and I hadn't said anything.

I do appreciate the concern and heads up. The vet gave me 6 capsules which are 100mg each. Now I'm no expert on this, but think that would make the dosage that Maisie gets 20mg a time (40mg a day) which is well below the 250mg in the link. Hmmmm. I'm not sure what to do now ...

Edit: This is also the first time my vet has prescribed this for a piggy.

@furryfriends (TEAS) thanks for that useful information.I'm going to take Freya to simon next week,to see if we can get to the bottom of her right sided clear nasal discharge.she has had numerous antibiotics,bolsivon,F10 Nebulisers ,metacam.it still continues .she has got a head tilt that she had when i got her from the rescue, she is 3 now ! I hope this drug is ok for your piggie @Janey x

i know this drug is used in human asthma,it is known that it can increase the heart rate, has to be given with caution in elderly people.looking at the link and reading the research for guinea pigs i would not want to take the risk !

I rang the vet yesterday to express my concerns and double check whether the dosage Maisie would be having is considered safe. Unfortunately she isn't in until Friday and will give me a call then - so I've held off giving her any until I speak with the vet.

Here's what my vet said about the Corvental:

I saw that article, its written nearly 40 years ago. But the doses are much higher. we are using 20mg/kg, they were talking about 50mg/kg having affects on the heart rate but not until 350mg/kg for seizure activity, so you would have to give her 7 times the dose we're on to cause seizures. I think we should still go ahead with the meds.

That must be a relief ! i hope it works well.Freya visited the vets today, she has chronic sinus prolems due to a ear infection she had at 8 months old.septrin has been prescribed, and to manange the condition with nebulisers.which the vet did there, she tolerated it very well.it is good that your vet is trialling other treatments.

Thanks @eileen it is a relief! I can finally start the meds tonight. Just hope it helps her.

Sorry to hear about your Freya though - hope she responds well to the meds
