Morning,

Rose is just over 4 years old. Around mid December i noticed she was hooting whilst breathing and i could see her breathing. We went off to the vets who listened and said definately a crackle in her chest. tried a week on Baytril, no change, tried a week on Septrin no change. had an xray to see if it is her heart. Heart shows is enlarged a little. also arthritis in all shoulder joints.

Tried a diuretic for a week to see if it helped, no difference.

She is still eating, maintaining a stable ish weight, hates taking medicine and being caught.

Vet said she would look into other options, came back with an inhaler type medicine (begins with a t) try that and see. again no change.

we have 2 other options, a powder (i cant remeber what this is hoping to do) or steriods if we stop the meloxidyl she is on for arthrits.

I am currently at the point of saying no more medicine leave her be. nothing seems to be working and i dont want her on medication for the rest of life. if this means she has a shorter life at least she will live it in comfort without being manhandled and forced medicine.

Does this make me a bad Mummy?

If she seems in pain i will re-start meloxidyl.

she still has a crackle in her chest and i can still see her breathing, she doesnt hoot anymore, although soemtimes you can hear her breathing is a bit laboured but not very often.

Can anyone give advice? or agree/disagree with the no medicine?

Has the vet not suggested heart medication in addition to diuretics? If her heart is enlarged I would suggest asking about ACE inhibators such as Benazepril. My Sophie is on this. There are a few brands, the main one being Fortekor.

Sorry to hear this, Helen has offered good advice above to discuss with vet. Sending Rosie love x

As far as I was aware steroids were vey dangerous for guinea pigs? I'm sure I read this somewhere. Can someone confirm this.

I would try for a second opinion with another vet maybe.

@Hank288 is right, steroids should be avoided. There is a sticky thread about it. The Problems With Steroids And Why They Shouldn't Be Used.

I've always found with my chesty pig that 10 days+ of medication is needed to clear infections, maybe that is what Rose needs?
Could the powder you mention as a possibility be Bisolvon? That is used to loosen the mucus. I have a pig currently having a pinch of it once a day (among other things) for a respiratory infection.

she did mention a pinch of powder so i'm going to say yes possibly that.

She was given bricanyl (terbutaline) 1/8th tablet twice a day
