New Born Pup
Hi. New here, from the US. Sorry this is so long but I am so upset that I can't help my guinea pig.
My senior guinea pig had a crusty eye for a while so I took her to an exotic vet recommended for guinea pigs an hour away over the summer. On the way there she got very upset, temperature went up and she almost died. When she came home she was barely alive for two days and her nose started to run and her breathing sounded terrible. Vet did xrays and said start of pneumonia and scurvy. She was on Smz and meloxicam and she seemed better. Went to my local vet, also exotic vet, for recheck and she didn't agree with her having scurvy (no signs, diet was perfect, etc). We did antibiotics for a month. About 2 months after, the breathing sounds returned. Xrays showed possibly a few off spots in lungs but nothing substantial. She did have low fever. Did Baytril for a month and meloxicam. Again got better but sounds returned again about a month after. Tried Smz but didn't get better this most recent time. Newest xray of lungs totally clear. Radiologists only suggestion was mri of head to see if sinus issues. We thought sounds were from lungs, now I am thinking nose. I have been doing a saline nebulizer twice a day and meloxicam and making sure she gets vitamin c. It is making no difference. No sneezing, coughing, etc. Good appetite and active. Continuous sounds when breathing. I asked vet about nasal culture and she said it wouldn't be useful since everything has bacteria that would show up. Is it an infection that hasn't cleared, scar tissue in sinuses, blocked tear duct....I honestly have no idea what to try next. She gets hay, pellets, veggies, and has a big c&c cage with fleece that i change often and wash in scent free detergent. No drafts by cage, etc.
Any advice is appreciated.
