Alfie was neutered yesterday, when he came home his breathing was fast and noisy. I put it down to the GA. He was worse this morning and I was at the vets first thing.

They have kept him in today, he's eating a bit, pooping and his gums are pink. But when examined his nose was crusty and one nostril blocked.

They did a chest x-ray, it isn't normal. They believe he could have always have had a lung problem which the GA has 'upset'. Or more likely, in my opinion, he has inhaled something during surgery.

I'm going to pick him up soon, but it hate the thought of him still looking so poorly, his ribs were moving so fast. He's going back for another check up tomorrow. He's had pain relief and antibiotics, and the vet says we could still loose him, it's a case of wait and see.

The vet is from the list of recommended vets, so he's getting good treatment.

Poor thing, hope he is much better soon.

I think it is quite common for an animal to have breathing problems after surgery and some vets give diuretic as standard afterwards.

That makes me feel a bit better, but he hasn't had a diuretic, I might ask about that tomorrow.

He's home & settled, seemed happy to be back next to the girls. He's nibbling hay and veg but no dried food. Vet mentioned giving him some vitamin c tablets, what do I get and how do I give it?!

Poor you! I hope that he is OK. If he is still not eating right, then please top him up with hand feed. For the time, please weigh him daily at the same time.

You can order Oxbow vitamin C tablets, but a 1/8 - 1/4 of a normal supermarket vitamin C table will do the trick in an emergency.

The guide also contains sourcing links for vitamin C.

I think we are over the worst! He had more painkillers and antibiotics at the vets today and she thought his breathing sounded a bit better.

As the days gone on he is brighter, especially when I get him out of his cage. The rest of the time he's still very quiet and still in his bed, but I guess he's resting and that's good! He seems to prefer sitting on my knee though!

If I could just get him eating his pellets I think he'd be well on the way. I'm syringe feeding him a bit, but he's not keen. He is still eating some hay and veg and lots of poops!

I really thought he wasn't going to make it yesterday.
