hi all!

So i just wanted to ask, do all guinea pig's make different breathing sounds? as i was listening to Ollie today, and well it seems he's more of a heavy breather than Stan. Stan doesn't make any sound when he breaths, but Ollie is a loud breather? I just wanted to see if this was okay?

Does it sound raspy or labored? If so, you should go to the vet as it might be an upper respiratory infection. Also look for any discharge around the eyes and nose. If you see or hear any of those things, take Ollie to the vet. One of my boars breathes quite loud, but I took him to the vet and everything was fine, but it saved me a massive headache and a lot of worry. If you are in any way worried it might be a URI, please take him to the vet.

Best wishes!

Honestly, I have no idea what laboured or Raspy sounds like, but I haven't seen any discharge. I'll have to keep an eye on it, see if I spot any discharge, but so far I haven't seen any.

Like any congestion sounds when breathing in the nostrils? But like when you have a cold, but guinea pigs only breathe through their noses, so youll hear it

I haven't noticed a sound like if we have a cold, haha. I'll have to check in a moment, see if it sounds anything like raspy or congested, thank you!

Hi!

Guinea pig airways are very narrow, so you hear every little obstruction. If you are worried, please have your piggy health checked by a vet, including the heart.

I mean, I'm not really worried, he seems good within himself, but I wouldn't be able to book a appointment until next wednesday, as that's when I'm next off work, so I shall keep my eye on it, and if it gets worse I shall take him in, and if I notice any discharge or anything.

Thank you!

How it’s all ok

Well, I've been keeping my eye on him, still no discharge, still no sounding raspy or anything like a congestion, so I'm just guessing it's how he is! He seems fine within himself! He's been biting the bars trying to get to my other male though, apart from that he has been eating, drinking sleeping everything fine! I just guess it is how he is which I'm happy about it.

Thank you! and thank you for asking about him!
Yes they do, with the constant hay supply too, and the food and everything, they definitely have slaves haha.

Just to give an update, thankfully this sound was just his normal self. On the other note, Ollie is booked in for a appointment tomorrow at my vets, mainly because he has now got raspy breathing, and he has now got a cough and sneezing. Well it was more like a cough where he coked for a second. But as I said. He has got a appointment for that tomorrow.

So it turns out, it's nothing on his chest and it's mainly around the nose area. She's gave me some Baytril to squirt into his mouth once daily at 1ml. To hopefully catch it before it changes into anything else.

Just updating on this, yet again for the past two days he has had the same sound. But it only appeared after some idiot (pardon my french) at home left paintbrushes in the backroom with turpes in them, after we told them NOT to and to leave it in the shed away from them. I feel so angry and annoyed, hes denying it all but yet it was him and now ollie is suffering again.

I hope that it settles down again over the coming days once you have aired the room thoroughly. ;)

So, hes no better. I've been using the medicine from last time, and it's almost gone, with him not getting any better he has now a vet appointment on Thursday morning. The only medicine I have left is metacam. Not going to use it though as I wouldn't know anything without vets advice.

Can you get an emergency appointment tomorrow?

Not unless I ring up really early in the morning, hes fine otherwise.

Still eating and drinking. Just a raspy breathing, hes happy within himself. Just a little sleepy. So we got the nearest available appointment at 8.40am on Thursday.
