Hi all
I'm new to the board and was wondering if any of you could help me? I am considering getting a couple of piggies as pets for me and my 9 year old son and was wondering if any has any recommendations on breed etc, do some breeds have better temperaments/more laid back than others? Should I buy boys or girls? How old should they be when weaned? When I make my decision I would like to buy from a breeder, are there any in my area that I could visit to help me with my research?
I'm sorry about all the questions but I don't want to just rush out and buy anything.
Thanks in advance if anyone can help :)

I've only got boars so couldn't really say if you should get boars or sows but you could visit your local rescue centre and ask about piggies they have instead of going to a breeder :)

Why don't you adopt from a rescue? They normally have guineas of all ages, breeds and can tell you about a certain guinea pigs temperament. Some people on here are actually looking or are going to be looking for good homes for babies that have be born in their care (mothers are rescues). As for boys or girls it is down to personal preference. Different breeds do have different temperaments but it is all down to the guinea at the end of the day. Hope this helps. O0

Hey there... welcome to the forum :)

I have both boars and sows. From my experience, sows seem to be a bit more laid back... it differs from each piggie but I would go for sows... and I also agree, its way better to rescue but I guess thats up to you :)

I have 2 teddys, 2 american shorthairs and 1 abby... they each have their own personality so I dont really see any difference between the breeds... I guess whatever piggie looks the best for you, you should go for it :)

I would suggest either getting 2 sows or 2 boars or a neautered boar and a sow. Piggies are lot happer in pairs/groups and to avoid un-wanted pregnancys definatley go for same sex pairs.

Hope this helped :)

HI and welcome to the forum
Like CC said many of us are looking for forever homes for babies born to rescue mums :) I would do heaps of research on the basics of the care of guinea pigs first. Build on it from there. We are all here to answer any questions you may have.

hi you girls are easier to manage and accept other females a lot easier then boys but saying that boys are more people friendly its more likely you will make a deep bond with a boy then a girl, and Ia gree try a rescue mixed breeds are lovely I like rex and shelties but any pigs are great I wqould advise not to get a long haired coat to begin with as they need a lot of combing out, I would go for a tort and white as an all round easy going pig either 2 baby boys who should bond quite well or 2 girls

I think boars are a lot more people friendly and a lot less moody at times ;D saying that if you get one boar you could have problems with introducing another, and you can only really have 2 together wheras ive found sows to be a lot more chilled and accepting when it comes to getting new friends...

Please please please consider going to a rescue, and its true, there are quite a few people owning rescues that have babies due soon! :smitten:

Welcome to the forum :) I agree with everyone else, you should go to a rescue to get your new guineas O0

There are some mild traits to the purebreeds but there are so many exceptions to the rule (as with all things guinea) that I would choose a guinea that you like rather than select a breed, its not like choosing a dog. I've found Rexes and Texels to be really laid back and Shelties are just daft (in the nicest possible way) but 10 other people will tell you 10 different opinions I'm sure! Most of mine are mixed breeds and there's mixed personalities in both purebreeds and Mixed breeds.

There are a lot of rescues out there, go along and take a look at some and see if there's someone there for you. Wheekers World Rescue List has an up to date list of guinea pig rescues and PetsR is a register of animals looking for homes- many of them guineas.

If you buy boys get an established pair or be prepared just in case they fall out later on, not always the case but it happens sometimes. A castrated boar and sow(s) can make a good pairing too :)

Welcome to the forum! I do agree, going to a rescue is a lot better than buying, i got my 2 sows rescued and I love them to bits! There is no differencce in temperament but a rescue piggie brings so much better feeling and satisfaction knowing you are caring for one who otherwise would have been 'left on the shelf'. My rescues are both Aby x and being sows they tend to have pmt... ;D but they are great, and I wish you luck! Let us know and if you get some post their pigtures :)
