Brillo Booked For His Op.

I've got a 5ml syringe. I just give him little bits at a time, I don't fill the syringe all the way!

I've got quite a big syringe that came with the recovery plus. She said to try and get 40ml of that into him tonight. That seems quite a lot but I'll try.
 
I would use a 1ml cut off at the tip like in the guide. The 15ml syringe they have given you is not easy to control and a 5ml one is not good either. It takes longer with a 1ml but is is easier to control. I know of pigs that are no longer with us due to that 15ml syringe.

I agree with @helen105281; the 5ml syringe is much harder to control and I ended up with some recovery food going down the wrong way when the syringe stuck and then suddenly went with a massive load (thankfully the piggy in question didn't get lung infection from it, but quite a load went up the nose which wasn't a nice sound). A 1ml syringe is much safer to use. Give about 0.5 ml in one go, that is about a mouthful and there is no danger of things going down the wrong way.
 
Thank you! I wasn't a fan of the 5ml. Fingers crossed he will take his recovery plus!

If he doesn't like the taste of it, you can try mushed up pellets; at least they will taste familiar. Anything you can get into him is great and will help to carry him through. Up the frequency of feeding depending on how much goes in. He is likely in some discomfort and not feeling like eating at all. you main aim to get him through this phase is to keep the system going. Once he is feeling better in himself, he'll find his appetite again.

It is not an easy time, but your good care can make all the difference! ;)
 
He seems to like the taste of the recovery! Just taking him a while to get used to the syringe. At least I'm getting some of it down him.
 
That's a real boon that he wants to eat his recovery! :)
 
I'm hoping so! He's still extremely cautious when it comes to his mouth though, I think hes worried it will hurt his mouth. Once he gets a little taste though he seems to move his mouth and take a little down.

After an hour of slowly taking bit by bit, I've left him be. He got to the point of not taking any more, and most dribbling back down. At least I know hes had a tiny bit of something.

If I'm not happy with the way he looks in the morning I'm going to take him to the vets for the day, so they can constantly try and get him eating. I've no idea what else I can do!
 
I think that would a be a good idea. He may also need his pain relief increasing if his mouth is sore.
 
If he's still not eaten anything by morning, and still won't take much, I'll take him in for the day. I just hate leaving him.
 
I've read all the messages from my last post on his surgery day, I just wanted to say your a fab piggy mummy you sound like your doing everything you can even though he's not eating well. Keep us posted and I hope he eats a bit more over night. Your plan to hand him over to the vet for the day if he's not eating by morning sounds a great idea hopefully they will start him eating and like Helen said look at his painkillers may be they are not strong enough.
Big huge and keep up the food battle knowing were all here thinking of you and offering support when you need it

Thank you so much! I just love him so much and want the best for him.

He felt a little cold last night. So he snuggled in my dressing gown and I put on the heating which seemed to keep him nice and warm.

Been down to him this morning! There are two teeny tiny poos and the cucumber and grated carrot has gone!

But he's really not looking good. Very lathargic and just really really not himself. I'm taking him into the vet the minute they open. I'm very worried this isn't looking good..

Aww come on little brillo! Your being a wonderful piggy mummy keep up the hard work. I'm sending healing vibes brillos way, I do think a vet trip is wise, especially if they can hand feed him all day at least you know he's in the best hands. I hope he picks up soon! Xx

Popped on to see if there were any updates, that's great to hear he has a warm cosy night and he's eaten some veg. Thinking of you Hun I hope they can him sorted and back to his normal self.
 
The vets is the best place for him hun, you have done everything you can. They can give him fluids and extra care that we can't do at home. I have my fingers crossed for him xx

Unfortunately Brillo lost his little battle.
When we got to the vet he couldn't even lift his head up. Took him all his effort to breathe.

It was so hard to see, and was unfair to put him through the pain of fighting when the outcome was going to be the same either way.

He passed away peacefully, and has returned home to be buried with his friends this afternoon.

I'm a blubbering mess. The crazy guinea pig girl now without guinea pigs.

Heartbroken.

RIP Brillo, my lovely little man.
 
Oh no! Oh i'm so sorry to hear this! Sleep tight little Brillo. You did everything you could for him :( :( *hugs* x
 
Oh ayemee, I am so sorry to hear about Brillo, he was a gorgeous little man. I know your heart is breaking just now but keep in mind that you did absolutely everything you could for him. It is a hard fact that they are never with us long enough, but you have you memories and the lovely pics. Keep your chin up, Jenny x
