Did anyone find when they first used a Britta water filter it tasted disgusting to them? I've followed all the guidance on how to prepare it, under the water etc. I tried a new filter I got in the pack and still tastes disgusting to me. I have guinea pigs with bladder issues so I could do with using it. But I am concerned something is wrong. I'm thinking it's probably my taste buds not used to the water.

It does taste different, for one thing you can't taste the chlorine! I don't like the taste of water filtered or not so I'm not a good judge. Tea and coffee taste much better with the filtered water though! If you have guinea pigs with bladder problems I would definitely recommend using filtered water. I've always used it for my guinea pigs, I have kidney/bladder problems myself and was advised to use filtered water by a urologist 40 years ago, before filters were really a thing in the general population.

Thank you. I was concerned something was wrong but it probably is just my taste buds! I was wondering about buying bottled water instead. Neither of them drink much but I thought I should probably also wash their vegetables in filtered water too.

It can take a while to get used to the raster of filtered water. I've had filtered water for years now and don't like the taste of tap water.

It's funny because it tastes chemically to me. As long as it's safe for them I will try it. I gave them some bottled water tonight, I don't know whether to just give that instead. Not sure what the calcium is like in filtered ourselves Vs bottled.

I’ve done some not very scientific research 🤣 into bottled waters and calcium levels vary widely. Tescos Ashbeck is the lowest I’ve found at 11mg per litre. Some others just give a range. I use a Brita filters. Our water here is very hard.

I got a Brita water filter about a year ago for the piggies but went on using tap water for myself. Then I thought I might as well use it for myself as well, and to be honest I can't really notice any difference in the taste, though it certainly makes a difference to my kettle! Living in a hard water area it's great not to have to keep descaling the kettle.

Does filtered water have more or less calcium? I have a bottle from Lidl that say 5mg of calcium per 100ml.

Filtered water has less calcium and minerals.

I live in a hard water area and have had only one bladder stone case in the 10 years since I switched to filtered water for my piggies. That stone happened as a result of the fresh food shortages at the start of the pandemic when we had to shield with 27 piggies with very limited shopping access - most of what little was around was higher in calcium.

I need calcium for myself, so the filtered water is strictly for my piggies but I would expect it to taste differently. It also depends on how sensitive your taste buds are.

Thank you. So it's better to use filtered than bottled water?
