Hi all

Its ok to give the stalk of the leaf as well as the leaf isn't it?

In greece we get massive leaves on the brocoli attached to really thick stalks (not the main stalk of the brocoli but the stalk of the leaf). I usually rip off all the dk green leaf bit and throw the stalk bit away, but I wonder can they have this bit too?

Yes they can but only when your there to supervise, there was another thread last week about a piggie getting a chunk of the stalk stuck on his tooth and all day he couldnt eat, drink or close his mouth until his poor owner got home and realised. But they love them and cauliflour leaves!

thanks for your reply, think i will cut it up into thinner smaller bits to avoid that!

I always cut the stalky bits into slices, but they can be eaten.

Awww that's so sad about it getting stuck on the pig's tooth...
thanks, will watch out for that!

I think it was Suzy who mentioned that broccoli stalks are a lot higher in calcium than the leaves so I don't give them too much, just to be on the safe side.

yeah that's right, they are high in clacium which can lead to bladder stones if the overall diet is high in calcium (not saying broccoli stalks alone will cause stones lol) so i feed them to mine *** occasionally, maybe once a fortnight, they do prefer the leaves and stalk to the other bits rolleyes
