So recently I posted about a guinea pig boar pair fighting and I have decided to separate them. I plan on getting one neutered and bonding him with my female pair and getting the other one a younger male friend. I feel bad about keeping them alone as I don’t know how long the process of all this is going to take should I still separate immediately

If blood has been drawn then the bond is broken and you need to separate them before any damage is done x Once neutered a boar needs to wait 6 weeks before he is safe to be introduced to a sow. Good luck, let us all know how you get on x

Thanks I’ve separated them now it definitely wasn’t fun but as soon as I did they both perked up and stopped rumble strutting and stuff Hugo is booked in at the vets to be neutered which is nerve racking in itself x

Sorry the bond didn’t work but guinea pigs are like people - they don’t always get on.
Your plan for them sounds good and shows what a caring owner you are, considering the boys’ needs.
Keep us posted

Sorry to go back on a thread that’s slightly old - I note that one of the plans is to get one of your boars a young friend. This is a risky strategy as the young boar will eventually hit teenage months and then they may have to be separated. There are a great amount of lovely pigs around 1,5-2 years of age which will greatly reduce the risk of hormonal issue break ups.

Will it still work if my current boar is around that age I was planning on getting him A friend in the time the other boar is recovering from his neutering. I will definitely look at some older type boars as I do want the bond to work. The boar who is being paired with another one ,Hugo, is the submissive one in the previous pair so hoping that helps

You would be best trying a rescue that offers boar dating for better chance of a compatible relationship. Some boars won't take to other boars after fighting and then some boars are too soft. My first boar Peter was the latter, he was bullied by every pig he was tried with. I took him in and got him neutered to live with my girls that I had at the time.

There are never any guarantees - I had a “perfect” pairing in mind which ended up in a split cage permanently as new pig doesn’t get along with old pigs but found her a friend.

What lady kelly said above ^^ regarding dating is a good idea, I would avoid young boars of a few months old still to hit their teenage months

I’ll give it a go I’m not sure of any rescues near me that would be willing to do dating but I’ll have another look
