Hiya, one of my piggies honey is having ongoing dental treatment at the cat and rabbit clinic. She is due for a dental there but this week has somehow broken her bottom teeth! They each broke a week apart and this has never happened with any of my piggies before. She has a good balanced diet so I don’t think it’s vitamin C related. They are housed in a c and c cage and she is a bar chewer when she knows she’s getting a snack so I think she’s broken them from that. I tried covering all the areas she would try and bite but she has sadly now lost the second one. It hasn’t really effected her very much, like I say she is due her dental so I will speak to Simon about it but I wondered if anyone else has any experience with this happening with their piggies? And how quickly they grow back. She is such a sweet girl and has been doing so well. I’m hoping once her back teeth are done that’ll help her adapt better on her front teeth. Thank you in advance❤️

broken incisors are not uncommon. I have had a Guinea pig in the past who broke his incisors and went to Simon for a tidy up once every 6-8 weeks. generally speaking the broken tooth/teeth will grow up to meet the opposing tooth and once that stage has been reached they will grind against each other and eventually even out and be back to normal with 3/4 weeks or so.
Very occasionally a root can be damaged and that tooth can grow ‘fat’ this means the tooth can become rather wider than normal so the opposing tooth can not fully wear down the ‘fat’ tooth so would need a quick burr to keep it under control. (my piggie Bill had this problem, that’s why he had a regular tidy up with Simon)

Have a look at the link, it explains how a broken incisor grows back, I found this page very useful and informative

Broken incisors can happen and most of the time they grow back quickly and without any problems.
Please keep an eye on her eating. Maybe you'll need to cut veggies into stripes. Most piggies can eat hay without any problems.

Thank you so much for your responses. She’s a regular dental piggie there now. We are booked to go back in 6-8 weeks time based on how she’s doing. As last two times she’s actually been good for longer than we both expected. We went to see him Saturday and she’s had her teeth done. He actually said the rate of growth was good and she doesn’t need to come before 8 weeks which is great! She’s doing okay however I am struggling with her eating a bit. We are watching her weight and providing critical care feeds etc but she’s just become so fussy. She’s only taking certain foods and has become fussy with her critical care whereas before would eat the whole bowl! But I found this happened last time after she’s been having it for a while she becomes bored unless I mash in some banana.
She’s really trying to eat the hay but is struggling. I don’t know if this is because of her bottom teeth missing or because she’s still adjusting after having her back teeth filed back on the weekend ? X
