I just put Poldark back in his cage and he scrabbled and caught his leg on the bar as he jumped in.

Now he won't put his foot down one of the toes looks twisted and he bit it so there's blood.

What should I do? My mum says the vet's probably won't be able to do anything so she doesn't want to go but even if it's just a broken toe I'd rather get some painkillers and possibly some stitches for the bite wound he gave himself.

I'm sorry to hear Poldark has hurt himself :(

It could be a number of things ranging from a break to a fracture to a sprain but the fact he has bitten at it, indicates he's in pain.

At the very least, he would benefit from some painkiller / anti inflammatory such as metacam.

Only a vet is able to prescribe this so please see a vet

We have some leftover metacam from when my dog hurt himself. But I wouldn't feel confident about the dosage.

It's not me that needs convincing to see a vet it's my mum. She's gone out to walk the dogs but when she gets back I'll tell her I can pay and that please could she just drive me.

It's always hard when having to convince parents. I hope that your mum listens to you.

Chances are Poldark has just sprained or pulled his leg / foot but he will feel more comfortable having had metacam.

Good luck

The vet website has a symptom checker thing and that came back with 'Urgent - see us today' so I hope that will convince her. I'm tempted to just call and make the appointment but it would be awful if I then couldn't get there.

I've just seen this thread and am so pleased you got your guinea pig seen . What a great idea for vet to have a symptom checker on their website!

I hope your guinea pig feels better soon.

In the end I just called and made the appointment without asking my mum! I paid for it myself so luckily it wasn't too much.

The vet was SO nice. She tickled Poldark and made him purr! :) she's not on the approved vet's but she's a small furry specialist so maybe she should be?

Poldark is sleeping off the trauma of having his afternoon nap disturbed. I might let him sleep in my bed with me tonight. I love him more than ever even though it's just a dislocated toe

Perhaps she could be added to the recommended vet list if you could put her name and the surgery where she works :)

We've been to the vet and she said it was dislocated! She popped it back in and gave us some metacam. I think he really liked her :) I've dosed him up on his painkillers and he's gone back to his favourite nap spot a bit disgruntled by the whole thing bless him
Good for you for insisting and doing the right thing for your piggy!

He's still slightly out of it on his painkillers. We enjoyed cuddles and salad this morning :)

The vet is Kathryn Hill at Windmill Veterinary Centre in Winslow. She was really fab although now I've said she's a specialist I'm not so certain but I get the impression she'sreally experienced with "small furries" as she put it.
