Hi my Guinea pig Oreo jumped out the cage last night and broke off his nail completely. It was bleeding quite a lot but managed to stop it. Today he has been limping and seems quite hurt. this is my first time dealing with this and I’m not sure what to do? Should I take him to the vets or just clean it and watch for infections?

@Cassiekelly He may have broken his toe so a vet visit would help. The vet can prescribe pain medication to help with any pain or inflammation.

You're very welcome @Cassiekelly.

It could be possible that he's just being a wuss and he may stop limping shortly. I've had a few pigs like that in the past. I have one at the moment who screams when I cut his nails and he limp for a few minutes afterwards (until a piece of dill makes him forget).

But generally they tend to only show signs of pain when they are hurting.

Yes I wasn’t sure because last night he was running on it fine but today he has been limping so I’m just a bit concerned. Yeah I have 2 Pigs and one just sits there when getting his nails clipped and Oreo hates it and will never sit still.

If he's limping, you can certainly get it checked and get some pain meds. One of my pigs ripped her nail off where it met her foot in the same way... tons of blood, but it didn't appear to bother her much and she never had an issue once the bleeding stopped... the nail even grew back eventually. One of my other pigs bent a nail (no blood) and hobbled around looking sad for a couple of days, so individual pain tolerances may vary.

Okay thank you think I’m going to take him to the vets to get checked out

This is what Oreos nail paw is looking like 2 days after it happened
