Hi all,
I'm a newbie here but have been reading with interest all of your posts and thought I'd ask your advice. My peego is called Gerry, he's about 4 and a half. I noticed on Monday that he's broken his top two teeth, one is just down from the gum (about 1/2cm), the other is at the gum level. Both are gradually starting to grow back and his bottom ones don't seem to be doing anything unusual at the moment. He's not managing to eat very well though and I just feel so helpless, he loves his food always has a supper of fruit and veg along with constant access to dry food, hay, forage etc. He's still eating his hay and grass which I think is good for grinding down his remaining teeth but struggles with his normal food even though I chop it up into cubes for him. I even tried blending some of his favourites last night into a mush but he wouldn't look at it. Most of the time he seems ok in himself, still running into the living room to try and get to the wires (he seems to have a fixation on these!) and still helping me out with planting some flowers last night although he had trouble nibbling the leaves! Other times he just seems miserable but I guess if he can't eat properly then he would be miserable. I keep wondering about taking him to the vet but then I think it would only stress him out and what could they actually do? How long do you think it will take for the teeth to grow back? Is is it just a waiting game? How long should I give it though before he can eat properly. He's not really a lap pig, he lives with a rabbit (and I've seen all the advice that says you shouldn't do this) but they've been together all their lives and cuddle up together and groom each other etc. so I don't think that he would let me hand feed him on my lap. I guess as long as he's eating hay and grass and drinking ok then this will be ok for a few days? To most people he's just a guinea pig but to me he's my world. Any advice gratefully received.

One of my pigs broke his 2 top teeth a while ago. They grew back within a week and you wouldn't know it ever happened...

If you are concerned that he's not eating enough, try syringing mushed-up pellets (pellets + warm water made into a paste). You can buy 1ml and 5ml syringes at the pharmacy.

Hope this helps

hi

Sorry to hear your piggy is a bit under the weather.

Problems with front teeth often indicate worse problems with the back teeth - which you can't really see. The front teeth will grow back in a few days / a week but if the back teeth are overgrown then they will need sorting. A good vet or rodentologist will be able to do this without anaesthetic, sadly most vets tend to put them under, avoid this if possible.

It will be easier for him to eat veg if you grate it in a cheese grater, he should be able to munch on carrot gratings etc. and grass.

Pop him on the scales and weigh him regularly as they can lose condition and weight fast.

If your vet is good with guineas then I'd take him ASAP. If your vet isn't good with guineas then you need to find one that is... this will be his best chance. If the back teeth are overgrown they will be able to sort them out quite easily and he'll have almost instant relief and be able to eat again.

If it's not teeth but something else affecting him he'll need treatment too.

Hope he's ok

Sophie

just a question because i haven't seen many of teeth breaking problems that often is it possible the rabbit could of kicked your piggy?

I suppose being honest I wouldn't totally rule it out as they both run round in circles when I'm cutting up their supper but it's not happened before in 4 years of them living together. It's almost as if bunny knows there's something wrong with Gerry as he's giving him more cuddles and attention. Maybe you're right and it's a guilty conscience...

Thanks to everyone else who has replied, I'll try the cheese grater option tonight!

try his favourite herb pureed,if he isnt getting enough or you suspect weight loss Critical care is a good option do you have any? or science recovery is similar xxxxx
