My guinea pig broke her lower right incisor in august. I took her to the vet and she was hopefull that the tooth will come out but it didn't. I have been trimming her opposite tooth after every 10 days as it keep growing. The vet is sure that the tooth is not coming out now and she didnt advise xray as my piggy was behaving normally and eating normally and hasnt lost any weight. I'm travelling for 20 days next month leaving her in a boarding house for piggies. Can i leave her for 20 days without a trim or should i arrange for a doctor to trim it in my absence. I'm not sure what to do. I have heard some people in my situation only trim once in 3-4 weeks. How long can i let the tooth become before a trimming.

If she is eating hay/grass and also harder veg like carrots, there shouldn't be a problem. I've got a piggy with a missing bottom incisor and he has not needed anything done to the remaining one. I would speak to the people your piggy is staying with and explain the situation. Tell them what length the tooth should be (maybe take a photo) and agree on a trusted vet who could treat if needed. However, with the right foods and/or toys, there shouldn't be any cause for alarm.

She never stopped or decreased her eating for a day. She eats everything. Do you also trim your piggy's opposing tooth?

Hi an update and a question. Bonky's teeth is still missing. I have to trim the opposite teeth regularly as it keeps on growing. There was no sign of her lower teeth coming out until now. While trimming her upper teeth I noticed something where her lower teeth used to be. I gently rubbed my finger over it and its sharp like a teeth or bone should be. I'm saying bone as the edges are not as smooth as teeth are. There is no redness around that area and she eats like normal. Nothing else is there just this thing. She has been to the vet thrice and three diff ones thay all say that thetooth is never coming. What can this be?
Any ideas

Are her bottom incisors also missing, as well as the top incisor? If so you will need to get the remaining tooth trimmed regularly. If there is nothing to wear against it will keep growing. I would recommend thet you get the tooth burred (ground down) by a vet rather than clipping as this can splinter the tooth and cause problems. I know of a guinea pig whose top incisors do not grow properly and she needs regular attention every 2 weeks or so.

Hi thanks for the reply. Her bottom right incisor is missing so i have to cut the opposing upper right incisor. Only one tooth is missing. The doctor also clipped it and taught me how to do it my self. No one burred it down all vets have just clipped it using a cat nail cutter. I had no idea that was bad.

Ginge a boar of mine has only 1 lower insisor, and 2 top plus a peged 3rd and vet used to trim, but l have found that resticting all veg appart from Carrot keeps them level without the need of trimming in any way, (been a few mounths now )

l was considering macking the trip to Simon Madox to have the peg tooth removed, but as it is static l will leave well enought alown!
my vet is good, but the 3rd tooth is a less than a cm thin and xrays arnt able to regestor it , so l need an expert
