Broken Tooth!

I am new to this website and have joined because very recently my guinea pig George (who is very energetic) decided to leap out of my arms to get into his house before I could get there! He fell onto the patio and chipped one of his top teeth near to the gum, and one of front toenails has come off as well! I have been watching him this evening but worrying that there may be something more I should do? He has been eating some chopped up greens and been quite himself so far. I am going to check on him regularly to make sure he is eating and walking well. I feel absolutely terrible and am wondering if there is anything anyone would recommend?
 
If you think there is any change to him at all pop him along to the vets as it could be that he needs some pain relief. In my early days of being owned by piggies my young one decided to climb her cagemate and use her as a "foot up" to jump out the box and faceplant the patio. It was horrendous and there was a lot of blood BUT she was fine. I took her to the emergency vet for pain relief and a few days later one of her top teeth came out as it must have broken below the gumline. It grew back without any problems and apart from that she had a little grazing to her nose/face. Keep a close eye on him and I'm sure he will be fine. I now move mine around in a cosy so they can't do any daredevil stunts
 
First of all, don't feel bad, even experienced piggy owners have incidences like this. I know with some of mine I have to be very careful when putting them back into the hutch and Ive had Admiral Jellicoe do exactly that to me. He's just got too much energy that one!...

Anyway I digress...

Has the tooth broken off or a bit come off? Teeth do grow back, I had one whose two front teeth came out and grew back perfectly well.
With the toe, keep it clean as possible and keep an eye out for infection, any swelling, redness and heat. Try and keep George quiet if possible and regularly weigh him too.
 
The tooth has broken to the gum with around a few millimetres left, will it still grow back and be ok?

Hi, the tooth should grow back ok. One of my lorries jumped out of my daughters friends arms and knocked all 4 front teeth out. We hand fed him for about a week until his teeth grew back. Sending you hugs xx.
 
@E&George It should grow back fairly quickly. Just keep an eye on the corresponding bottom tooth to make sure it doesn't overgrow and that there is no damage/infection to the gumline. If he is eating fine then there is no need to top up with syringe feed
 
:wel: to our friendly forum. This is the right place for all things piggy! Anything you need to know just ask away. No question is too small or stupid to ask. You will never be made to feel silly for not knowing stuff. If you don't know you need to find out. You will always be treated with respect and kindness. When I joined up just over a year ago I didn't know a lot about the world of piggies and I have learnt so much. Everyone on here had the best interest of guinea pigs and their slaves and the forefront of everything they do.

Have a rootle around and see what you can find. The guinea pig guides at the top of the page are my go to if there is stuff I need to know but also it is good to have a chat. I have made load of forum friends and I have met some of them too.
 
Hello All

Just to say I just got back from the vet, my piggy Monty also broke his front tooth (bottom right incisor).

They filed it down and checked the rest of his mouth and have prescribed pain meds and probiotics - he was having some difficulty chewing harder foods.

It's expected to grow back in a few weeks BUT the problem is that as it's shorter than the rest, the others may grow to be different sizes so you need to keep an eye on them, and may have to revisit the vet to file them down etc.

I would really recommend taking your pig to the vet @E&George because a broken tooth can be serious - piggies need to be eating all the time and he might be in pain, the tooth might also be sharp / need checking!
