Hey everyone,
I'm in a bit of shock at the moment..
I was just playing on the kitchen floor with my boyfriend and my two guinea pigs. I don't know what on earth happened, but I turned round to see a tooth fall from my guinea pig's mouth. I know that my pigs weren't fighting, as me and my boyfriend kept an eye on them at all times. So what could've caused this? And will his tooth ever grow back?
I hope he's not in pain :( will I need to contact a vet?

Help please! x

Its ok. Its very unusual for a piggies tooth to fall out, but it should grow back with time. Do i remember you saying your pig had a bit of a fall earlier this week? It may have jolted the tooth loose? Maybe see a vet tomorrow to get him checked over. Just make sure he eats this evening. No need to see a vet right now. If your worried about pain, you can give him 0.2ml of children's neurofen for some pain relief.

I hope he starts feeling better soon.

x.

the tooth will grow back, quite quickly in my experience. Anything could have caused it... biting on bars... literally anything. Bumble lost her tooth (think it broke below the gum so took a few days before it came out). Try and have a peek and see if there's any damage to the gum. You might want a vet to check it over on the safe side, we were given metcam to make sure no pain put her off eating and within two weeks it was back to full size

So its gonna grow back? That's a relief.
Yeah he did have a wee bit of a fall, but I never thought a tooth would fall out a couple days later. I'll pop by the vets tomorrow to make sure everything is okay. I had a wee look at his mouth earlier and I didn't see any blood so hopefully its not a bad injury.
Thanks guys x

That's exactly what happened with Bumble, if there's no blood/no trauma to where the tooth should be you might be fine. It probably broke beneath the gum line so took a couple of days to grow out. It will grow back and like I said I was surprised how quick it got back to the normal size. The vet told us to watch for the bottom tooth that side becoming too long because the top tooth wasn't there to grind it down but we've had no further problems at all

Thanks, I feel a bit more relaxed now.
I'm definitely gonna take him to the vet tomorrow though, just so he can double check and make sure everything is okay. x

I've given him some apple now (his favourite) and a little bowl of water so he can lap it up easily.
My boyfriend gave him some water through a syringe as well, and he drank that fine.

Thanks :) x

UPDATE!

Took Phoenix to the vet today, everything is fine, but the vet gave me some medicine for him, just to help him if he's in any pain. So he's okay :)

She also said that if the medicine doesn't help, and his tooth isn't growing back, she'll need to pull out what's left of his tooth so a completely new one can grow back. And that would cost over £100, so hopefully his medicine works! x

awwwwwwwwww sorry to hear about this......gosh they can do some damage to their toofies!

be careful about letting anyone taking out a toofie completely........ ask around first see what our experienced people say :)

cut up all foods into slithers and maybe some hay into smaller pieces i do hope Phoenix's toofie will grow back like normal :)

sending some healing loves and wheeeeeeeeks XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

toofies do take a few days (if broken up to the gum it'll be a little longer) to grow back........ and to a normal length :)

oh that is good news, I had the medicine for Bumble when this happened but then it didn't seem to stop her eating anyway and she still always goes for the harder food (like carrots) first hehe hope it grows back with no problems

aww I'm sorry to hear about your pigs tooth, my patch has a weak tooth ans it snaps whenever, the vet said its just one of them things but there are ways to help it, mayb its that?

My piggy George snapped his front tooth off a couple days before I adopted him It was fully grown back in just under 2 weeks. He struggled a little with veggies but I found if I grated the carrot and shredded lettuce and held on to one end he could it eat. Tiny pieces of cucumber were ok as well with out the skin. He could still eat hay by himself.
I'd ask for a second opinion before removing the tooth completely.

Latest News!
Phoenix has been taking his medicine really well, and his teeth are almost fully grown back! :)) I'm so glad that he doesn't need to go under anaesthetic and get his teeth pulled out. Just thought I'd let you all know hehe :)

x
