I have brought a guinea home today.

I had absolutely no intention of getting another guinea - infact I was looking for willow toys. BUT sadly I saw a lone guinea in a cage with 2 rabbits. he looked very very sad. So I went to the owner of the stall to ask why he was in with rabbits. he said as the other guineas were girls and this was a boy and he had no more cages. It had been that way for a month.

I was considering what to say next when one of the rabbits attacked the guinea pig! the guinea lurched back and started teeth chattering and I lost my mind. I bought him at a very reduced price as he was a long termer in this pet stall and he wanted rid. He's 3 months old and petrified.

I am not sure what next - I didn't get that far. I may try and rehome him when I know he's okay or neuter and in with the 6 girls, thei cage is getting extra parts today anyway so it would be no bother to section him off a bit of the top floor for now. He had no food or hay. I know the whole perpetuating thing but once i saw him trying to defend himself against the rabbit I just couldn't leave him.

We went to do some shopping and went back to get him after 45 mins - the rabbit was just about to go for him again as we got him out of the cage.

No marks on him at all. I just hope he's okay inside and all.

For now he's called Orson. Will take some photos once he's settled.

Oh wow, poor guy! I think you did the right thing, he needed taking away from those rabbits and from the sounds of it he was in danger of getting hurt by them.

I guess congrats are in order, I do hope you can keep him! Looking forward to seeing photos. :)

AWWW - I think I would have done the same thing if I was you! How can you stand by and let that poor boy being beaten up by two rabbits?

Best wishes to Orson, and I hope that he can find his feet (and his version of paradise) soon!

Thanks. After being here and into rescue and getting the whole perpetuating thing it feels weird to get one from a shop. But for a couple of quid and my conscience if i had walked away I don't think I could have left him. Even my husband was telling me we had to after the rabbit incident. The guy was trying to tell me that the guinea is the one who bullies the two rabbits!

Thank goodness you were able to get him away from the rabbits, I can't wait to see pics and hope he will be able to settle with you and eventually reign supreme with your girls.

Oh my goodnes Lisa Well Done I don't think I'd have left him either your guinea numbers are certainly increasing lol :)!

I know! It's not what I had in mind that's for sure. I wanted willow toys - the guy didn't even know what they were!

My family are going to really have a go! They think i've lost the plot. I think i can just about manage to keep him with no extra cleaning routine and no extra cages. Just a bit more food and that's no worries.

Hes in a temporary cage at the moment and he started off sitting frozen in the corner under the hay rack (despite the hidey) and the last 10 minutes he's been exploring. He's eating fresh herbs, going through the tunnel I put in and eating pellets and hay bless him. He even popcorned. I think he's pleased to be away from those bunnies. Don't get me wrong I love rabbits but this wasn't right - I can totally understand after that why they should never be housed together.

Well done you, smile to yourself and feel happy to have rescued another poor little piggie . He must have been meant for you.

OMG he popcorned already! You have DEFINATELY done the right thing, I hope you can keep him. :)

I hate cases like this, I am so glad it wasn't me because there is no way I could have the room for an extra piggy. I'd have been ringing friends and family to get him! :(|)

Orson is such a cute name. Piccies!!

Christine - this very morning I put a hay loft in one of the cages and that meant I had a spare hay rack and a spare parsley bell which were sat on my kitchen table when I got home with Orson.

Then the attack happened with the rabbit in the few short minutes I was watching. I thought that was like the hands of fate as I was prepared to walk away until I saw that fight. So either they happen all the time or it was fate.

Well done Lisa!

I think in the end it's about the animal, not where it comes from... This little fellow really needed someone. I don't think the animal should suffer because of a principle.

Look forward to pictures of little Orson!

That's the problem - I know i can keep him. The cage is huge and could easily be extended a bit if it ever seemed a bit small. It's just too easy to keep him.

No that's true. It means i will have 10 guinea pigs!

The RSPCA wouldn't home to me now would they as i am considered FULL by their standards. Heck I was already considered full by myself before he came along!

I'm so pleased he's out of there though - it was scary seeing the big rabbit go for the mini guinea pig. He didn't have any hidey either so he was backed into a corner and only had teeth chattering and nipping to deter him.

Considering that he has already been popcorning - he must be SOOOO happy!

I can understand how difficult it would be for you if you handed him on...

PS: I am considered certifiably crazy by my family after six new guinea pigs in half a year, so you are not alone!

Well done for saving him, i bet he is so happy now and it sounds like you saved him in the nick of time from the horrible rabbits. He must be very happy if he has done a popcorn.:p
Why dont you get him neutered and put him with a set of your girls or are they altogether with Mork?

Weibke I'm pleased it's not just me! My mum will be thinking i've lost the plot and will no doubt tell me off. I'm 36 and can still feel like i'm about 6 around her.

I am happy that he's so happy. He must have been ravenous as he's done nothing but munch munch munch solidly since he started popcorning. I gave him a bowl of water and he polished it off so i'm guessing he was dehydrated too. He looks exactly like one of my other guineas so if they end up together I wont be able to tell them apart.

No I have 2 girls and mork in one cage and 6 girls with no boy in another cage.

he could go in with them. That's where i am putting him tonight - in his own section in that cage - see what they make of him before i consider neutering.

Great idea he could have his own little pad next to the girls. Hope all goes well.
Also i went to costco today and they have lowed the price of the grids to £8.01 that's with the vat, its typical that would happen after i bought some a few weeks ago.

Aw poor little Orson (love the name btw!) he's so lucky you came along when you did. I really hope everything works out and you can keep hold of him :)

Such a good price! But so was the original price.

Promise to post some photos later - believe it or not i am trying to work on my last course at the moment! not very productive but i am getting things done!

Whether you keep him or rehome him, Orson is one very lucky lucky piggie to have been found by you..

Good idea but i think it may be pricey as they are heavy. But i would be more than happy to get them for anyone who wanted them and if they are happy to pay postage i would send them. I suppose the p&p and grids may be cheaper than £22:))

It may be cheaper to get them couriered to people.. We send things from work occasionally and it's generally cheaper than the Royal Mail..
