aw what a cutie!

It all depends on the pig as to how long it takes them to get used to you.

He is experiencing new sounds, new sights, new smells so it will all be a bit daunting for him, and your hands will look massive to him so its going to scare him a bit until he gets used to you.

There are some good threads on here to look at regarding this question, and I'm sure the more experienced peeps on here will post some tips for you.

Just be patient with him, and I'm sure in no time at all he will be your little cuddle piggie :)

aww it's a mini Theo!
Thats the name of my dark eyed white piggy by the way :)

As already mentioned, it depends on the pig.
Some only take a day or two, others will take weeks.

Keep doing what your doing and he'll come round eventually! xx

Its different for every pig on how long it takes to settle down - my humphrey was skittish for 2-3 days but my Rodger is still skittish now and we've had him since May! He's only just started coming to my hand for veggies!

He will eventually settle down - bribing with treats and toys and talking to them is the best route! Also try putting your hand into the cage frequently and just placing it on the floor for him to smell - also handle his normal food well with your hands - then he'll relate your smell to something positive that wont hurt him.

Hope he's all loved up with you soon! x

yes he is getting better i think and its only the second day…he will come up to me when i have carrots or other treats and eat them and he lets me pet him when he's eating and he makes the cutest noises when i pet him but most of the time he's just in his little hidey hole. it's kind of off and on…one time he may let me pet him, the next he will run….but he always runs when i try and pick him up…..i'll be getting him a bigger cage next week and i'm thinking of getting him a cage mate:))
when i put him down for floor time he definitely runs from me and fines the most secluded spot he can…very discouraging, but i'm trying to be patient! lol..he's just so cute! haha...

Even tame pigs will run away when you try to pick them up, especially if you stand over them.

In the wild they are prey animals, so are often hunted by birds which attack them from above. So if youre standing over him to pick him up, his natural survival instinct will be to run and hide.

When hes out having floor time, do you put igloos or boxes or tubes for him to run and hid in? If you dont its worth doing that, so he will have somewhere to run to if he gets frightened. It will also be easier for you to pick him up if he's in one of these. Obviously be careful you dont drop him, or he doesnt slide out the other end if its a tube lol!

It took weeks for Rodney to trust me, and for the first 2 days he hid in the sleeping part of his cage :... :... But soon enough his personality started to show and he ended up being such a bold and brave little man, that would trot up to greet any visitors that came to the house :) It was such a pleasure to know that he felt safe enough to do that, and was happy to sleep on the rug infront of the fire. He really was a dog in a pig suit! lol

i haven't put any boxes or anything down for floor time but he finds places lol… i'm guinea-proofed my room decently and i just think he doesn't know what to do lol…i will put some boxes down, though.but he LOVES being wrapped in the towel in my lap….he falls asleep every time on my chest…and i talk to him and pet his head and he just looks so very cute x) lol.

kinda worried about Neelix :( i put all his things on the ground and let him have some floor time..he started, what at first i thought was, popcorning… but i noticed him scratching his ears quite a bit and i noticed a lot of people saying it could be ear mites :o

Luckily, my step father is an exotic animal vet and he is gonna look at him for me..but its still saddening…:(

Hey, Welcome to the forum. Neelix is x) x)

Piggies are very shy at first so as others have said - plenty of boxes, hidey houses till he feels a little more secure with new surroundings. One of our piggies we still can't pick up so we use a 'chube' to collect her in. Lots of food as bribery helps!

Hope the scratching is nothing, very handy having a vet is the family!

Hope to see more pigtures of him soon.

Don't worry, mites are easily treated if you catch them early enough :) xx

Your so lucky to have an exotic vet in the family this piggy is gonna do well. Guinea pigs often get mites if they are stressed and the move to a new place may have done that. But dont worry its easily sorted. Good luck and welcome home to your new little boy.

oh yes definitely a star trek fan….neelix was my favorite! and thank you all for your comments..my step dad checked him out today and brought home some medicine for ear mites….he checked his respiratory stuff because he was sneezing and said there is a little something there but he could fight it off himself but he'll check again in a week..if not he will medicate him….that's the last time i'll buy my piggy from a pet store :(
