I have just been holding Sophie and her eyeballs are brown! What could this be a sign of? Shall I take her to the vet tomorrow or is it an emergency? She is eating and drinking as normal.

What colour eyes does she normally have? My guineas' eye colour seems to vary a bit according to the light.

Which bit of the eye is this? Looking at my piggies I can only see the coloured part of the eye, mine all have black eyes. You occasionally see a white bit at the side but I'm not sure if that's eye ball or nictitating membrane (would have to look up if piggies have this eye feature or not!).

Can you post a pic if you're worried?

The eye just comes out black in a photo. She has black eyes but around is brown.

The bit at sides was white but is now brown?

Honestly don't know, is she okay in herself?

She is fine in herself. She is eating and drinking and attacking a paper bag.

Do you mean these white bits are brown?

Is it both eyes or just the one? Is it a sudden change, as in ok yesterday but different today - could indicate an injury.
Have you changed any products eg hay, bedding, washing powder for fleeced etc? Could it be an allergic reaction?
Does your piggy object if you touch around the eye/mouth area? Dental issues can sometimes cause eyes to be affected. Is it a bloodshot looking reddy brown?

Not sure if their eyes change colour with age, but would think that would be a gradual process if they do.
Only two of mine have ever really showed the white bits clearly, and I'm pretty sure that they alwaus stayed white though.
Could give them a bathe with cooled, boiled water with a tiny pinch of salt in. Might help reduce colour change & soothe it if it's an irritant.

Hope you can sort the issue, hopefully it's nothin drastic if piggies still acting normally ,keep us updated I'm Intrigued as to the answer.
Might be worth phoning the vet, they can discuss any suggestions with you, might even be a simple explain to it & they can put your mind at rest :)
Xx

Weird thing is she can see fine and is alert. I can touch her anywhere without her objecting too. I have not changed any products at all so it is unlikely she would have developed an allergic reaction. I have been trying to call the vet but they have been busy all morning. I will keep trying.

That bit is the sclera...the bit that's usually white. It's probably just pigmentation. Paddy has some brownness around the edges of his eyes, but if its a sudden change then it could be worth getting it checked out.

Piggy eyes change with age, and the white can become less defined as colour "bleeds" into it. It looks to me that this is what is happening here, nothing worse. If in doubt and if it is a sudden change, have it checked out to be on the safe side.

PS: Always see your vet if you notice blood or pink stains in an eye.

Sophie had a check up at the vets and they said her having brown eyeballs can be connected to her lungs. Sophie has a breathing problem that she seems to have been born with and the vet thinks it is connected. She said her eyes are fine and nothing to worry about.
