Dental Bubble Has Dental Issues

Hi, a couple of days ago my 2 and a half year old boy Bubble started having trouble eating his veg. He wasn't eating anything that required much chewing and couldn't manage nuggets but could eat sprigs of parsley or coriander but would take ages. He was still really keen for his food though, just couldn't physically eat it. He was still eating hay but not as much as usual. I phoned Simon at Northampton but they were fully booked till next week and I knew it couldn't wait that long so took him to my local vet. I don't know how good they are as this is the first issue I've had with my boys. Anyway yesterday the vet had a look at his mouth and said that he did have some very small spurs on his back teeth so he was kept in to have them taken off under GA. I know this is not ideal but I don't know of anyone other than Simon who does conscious dentals. He's recovered well from the anaesthetic and is eating hay and he stayed in last night to be monitored and syringe fed. I'm hopefully going to be picking him up this morning. How long do you think it should take him to be able to eat on his own?. And should I ask for painkiller to bring home if they don't offer me any? The vet said the spurs were only slight and she was surprised they would have caused him so much trouble with his eating. Any ideas on what else it could be anyone? Sorry for the long post, hope you're still awake!
 
It's unlikely one treatment will sort this so I think it would be a good idea to get him booked in to see Simon once he's back from holiday at the start of November. It's worth getting the appointment booked soon as they do get booked up very quickly. Please ask for some Metacam.. Did they say if he had any ulceration in his mouth?
 
I have got an appointment booked with Simon for weds because when I phoned them on thurs and they said they couldn't fit him in I booked an appointment on the understanding that if I didn't need it anymore I could just cancel. The person on the phone agreed I should get a local vet to have a look in the meantime. They didn't say Simon was on holiday though. Have spoken to the vet this morning and he said that Bubble is bright in himself and taking the syringe feed well but they want to keep an eye on him till he starts eating nuggets but he's not a big nugget eater anyway. Apparently they had a good look at his mouth and throat while he was under and all looks perfectly normal. I've got to ring the vets between 1 and 2 and even if they want to keep him in I can go and see him and take some favourite veg.
 
Good news, Bubs is home. He's eaten quite a few nuggets which he wasn't doing before, he's eaten some veg though not as much as usual, he's eaten hay and he's had some chewy pooeys! I was given cat metacam and some critical care to bring home. I still intend to take him to see Simon on weds. Am so glad he's home and Squeak is much happier too.:D

That's great news. What dose have they said to give of the Cat Metacam? What time are you seeing Simon on Wednesday? I am there Wednesday too xx
 
Hi, the dose is 0.7 ml of 5ml metacam once a day but I asked if I could divide it into 2 which they agreed. The appointment is 10.30.

Sorry for late reply, I've not had chance to go online since yesterday morning. Bubs had his appointment with Simon. It turned out his back teeth still needed a lot of work as they were pinning his tongue and he has a little ulcer on his tongue. His front teeth were also a bit wonky and one of the top ones is thicker than the other, possibly where he's fractured it in the past. (Bit of a bar biter!). He coped with the car journey really well and Simon said he seems otherwise well. Simon was great. Wish we had gone there in the first place. Wont hesitate if it happens again. Bubs is eating hay and tentatively having a few nuggets and little bits of veg although its still going in really slow. Hopefully will continue to improve now though. Just a little update on Bubs. His eating has been steadily improving and this morning he polished of all his veg for the first time! He's eating small quantities of nuggets and he's eating hay so all looks good. Just waiting for him to start putting the weight back on as he is sticking at 1160g approx. whereas before he was 1360g approx. Although he doesn't look particularly thin he feels it. Still at least he's not losing any. Perhaps now he's eating all his veg it will start to come back on.
 
I think it can take a while to regain the weight. My Tim hasn't put much on either since his dental issues but is managing to maintain at the current weight with a 40g fluctuation.
 
He is doing really well. Simon doesn't need to see him again unless we notice any issues. He is happy and shouting for veg every day.
 
That's good to hear. Bubs is pretty much the same as your Tim. Simon doesn't seem to think he needs to see him again soon but obvs if something changes I would go back.
