Have you really noticed that your guinea pigs are you starting to bulge out and get red? If that happens, then you can your Guinea pig probably has a corneal ulcer. This is actually common in guinea pigs. It can happen when two guinea pigs fight with each other, or it can happen if hay gets in the piggies eye. I have found the best solution to treating this, is to wet a cotton ball, and gently press on the guinea pigs swollen area. See if any pus will come out, because that means it’s working. My brown piggy (Violet) had a corneal ulcer a week after we got her. We used this method and about a few weeks later a ‘sea’ of pigs came out, then we let it be until the swelling and redness went down. If you have anymore questions, please reply I will be happy to answer them

Hello and welcome to the forum. This forum does not recommend home treating. Any eye injury can become very serious very quickly. If your piggies have pus coming out of the eye they need urgent attention from a vet and the appropriate treatment. This must be from a vet and not by some home treatment you have bought over the counter.

Your piggy or piggies need to see a vet urgently. There is a real risk they may need to have an eye removed if it deteriorates further.

We fixed it

We had check up at a veterinary office, and she prescribed a medicine to us.

Can you delete this post? I don’t want it on my page anymore.

I’m not sure why you would want to delete this thread. You started this thread specifically to give advice about home treating an eye injury. Part of the purpose of this forum is to educate about guinea pig care and wellbeing and for this reason I posted my responses above. If threads or Posts are deleted the public lose an opportunity to learn.

Glad to know your piggies eye is better after vetinary treatment. I have been through this very recently too but after a couple of weeks of antibiotic eye drops and metacam she has made a good recovery. Unfortunately if I had left it then I would have needed to pay for surgery to remove the eye, we have been very lucky indeed

Same with me, we used antibiotics for her eye and gave her eye drops. I forgot to add that in the post. But she’s all better now!

It is really important that you add this information on posts though. We have people viewing the forum for info without becoming members and I would hate for someone to believe they can cure an injury like this without medication.

Okay since you are a moderator, can you please add this “I also used antibiotic drops, prescribed by my veterinarian”

A bulging eye also has other causes than fighting or hay pokes.
Abscesses or growths behind the eye can cause it to bug out, as can high blood pressure, which we found out with one of the sows in the sanctuary.
