Bullying Or Accident?

Hi all

I have five wonderful fuzzbeans in my life. A neutered boar about 2-3yrs old, Ralis; two older girls about 1yr and 6 months, Zelda and Midna (the two in my profile picture); and two younger girls about 6-7 months old, Medli and Ilia.

A little while after getting Medli and Ilia I noticed it didn't seem that Ilia was integrating with the herd as well as Medli was. The introductions all went really smoothly and so I wasn't worried about anything as I've never had aggression in my piggies but I was still worried that Ilia seemed to be some kind of outcast. My boyfriend said I was just being an over-protective Mama and so I chalked it down to Ilia being naturally shy while Medli is naturally bold. I've watched them all like a hawk and saw no real signs to suggest otherwise! I've done a lot of reading and research as I feared maybe she was being bullied but her weight is steadily increasing just like her sister's, she had no signs at all of any injuries, she popcorns about floor time, and I often see her eating with the herd. She is definitely the lowest piggy in the hierarchy, but then again someone has to be, and I chalked the higher-pitched squeals to her just confirming that she isn't a threat to anyone's position (like you described in the Sow Behaviour thread). To top it off, she and Ralis seem quite fond of each other and I have seen them grooming each other more than once.

Her main problem is Midna. Midna has always been the troublemaker and grumpy grouch but has also always been 100% bluster and no substance who loves being with her herd. We've always had a share of bickering between them all, over the best sleeping spots and the best hay-eating spots, but nothing more than little non-serious fur nips and rumblestruts that quickly settle down. However tonight, when Midna went to tell Ilia off for trying to steal her treat, she has actually bitten the corner of Ilia's nose. It wasn't bleeding as such but there was blood similar to a graze on human skin. A small cut just across the narrow side of her nostril. I'm panicking and really worried for her and the stability of my herd.

Do you think this was an accident and Midna just got a bit enthusiastic and caught her in a sensitive place when she only meant to give a fur-nip? Or do you think Midna aimed to do this on purpose?

Sorry for the long post! Any advice would be great! Thank you!

Hi and welcome to the forum.
If there's no fighting or serious aggressive behaviour, it's probably just an accident. One of mine got a scratch on his face a while back during a particularly fraught dominance struggle, but it all worked out fine. Keep an eye on them and make sure you keep the wound clean, but it will probably be ok.

I definitely don’t know much about that but I just wanted to say your Zelda name theme is absolutely fantastic!

It sounds like an accident to me, have you got some antibiotics for her? Hope she heals up soon! :)

My Tonks is the bottom of my sow herd and she often gets kicked out of hideys or out of hay trays etc bless her. It's so hard to watch isn't it? Worst part with Tonks is she's very vocal so she screams murder when she is told off :))

As long as her weight is maintained and growing and there are no injuries then it should be fine! What size enclosure have you got for them? :)

Thank you, everything seems fine again thankfully. If anything Midna seems to have been much nicer to her all day! So I'm hoping it was just an accident after all. The wound already looks so much better and starting to heal nicely. I'll be watching the naughty munchkins very closely over the next few weeks!

Hahaha thank you! It started with Zelda (the white(ish) one on the right), my boyfriend said that tri-colour reminded him of 'tri-force' and also she has a rosette on her head because of her Crested heritage which looks just like a crown and then everyone else's names just fell into place. It's hilarious how much they fit the characters of their namesakes!

Thank you for replying! I am hoping it was an accident after all, everything in pen-life is perfectly normal and Midna seems to have been much nicer to her all day. I haven't got any antibiotics because it didn't look serious enough to warrant stressing her out more with a vet visit, it has already started healing really nicely so I think I'll just keep a close eye on her and see if it heals alright on its own. She's getting plenty of treats too, which solves all of life's problems hahaha.

It is so hard to watch/listen to! Hahaha Tonks sounds like Ilia, she's so noisy when she's told off. Midna is also really vocal and loud so when these two bicker I sometimes think someone's being murdered hahaha. Her weight is nicely healthy and she's still eating so I don't see much trouble there but as always I'll keep an eye on it. (I love your naming theme!) I forget the actual sizes of the pen, my boyfriend built it himself, it isn't small though. We're going to be building an even bigger one after this now just in case this will help.

Glad to hear she's on the mend! It's very hard to watch them all being mean to each other haha they look cute and fluffy but they can be real mean girls sometimes! :))

Sounds like it's going well, it may have been a strong season causing more trouble (We have some strong seasons in my herd, we have to duck and cover when Tonks is in season!).

Usually more space will definitely help, if I could I'd have all my pigs free roaming haha! More space for all the hormones ;)
