So the time has come that my oldest pig Africa has gotten bunged up, I mean he passes normally but seems uncomfortable around there and whenever i look, smells really badly and usually has something sitting inside him.

What i want to know is basically whatever information people have about this? Is there anyway to stop him getting like this? Cleaning him out makes me heave the smells so bad =S He's on 0.2 Calpol a day to help with any pain and has improved since taking it but still has a smelly back end. 8...

He sounds like he's impacted. How old is he? This is usually seen in older boars but not always, my 2yr old after being neutered became impacted at times.
The muscles of the perineal sac slacken & the soft cecal pellets can't always be expelled so form a lump.
You need to gently peel back the edges of his anus to expose the lump, which may drop out by itself, if not i use a baby wipe or tissue to remove it. It does smell but will give your boar instant relief.
There is nothing to stop it but i did find giving probiotic helped & that my boys needed cleaning less.
If he is impacted there is no need to give pain relief, just regular cleaning.

I started giving him calpol *** he seemed in pain at first, after he had a few doses he completely changed back to his normal self. See it started with him sleeping a lot and well he looked stiff when he walked, since he's taken some calpol he seems much better, not stiff but not completely himself still, he still settles down and sleeps when i hold him which he never does, he likes to run about.

Last time I cleared him out, he had white stuff all down there and a few bits of horse bedding stuff, everytime i pick him up he has a poop hanging from him which is unusual. Thank you for the information.

My boys usually have bedding, hay & hair stuck in their bums too. The white stuff you saw is a normal secretion :)

I agree with the information Niki has given you, it does sound like impaction.

How old is Africa? If he's been showing signs of stiffness and pain when walking and is becoming less active, it's worth having the vet check him over for arthritis - you'll be able to get longer-term and perhaps more suitable anti-inflammatory pain relief like Rimadyl or Metacam, and it'll help the vet to have details of a diagnosis made with regards to Africa's problems for any future vet visits.

Africa is about 3 years old now. Yes, it's defo inpaction but the thing is, i don't know if the way he is is because of his vits missing from not being able to eat his soft pellets. I cleaned him out today and he ate 3-4 of them so he at least got a bit. I have a rodentologist I usually go for help from. I'm going to take him to see him first then possibly visit the vets afterwards but I'm afraid I really dislike and mistrust vets after one rushed me through an appointment, charging me £91 and telling me my last pig was having an allergic reaction when he was actually dying of heart failure. =[ So I feel as if I'm condemning Africa to death with the idea.

hi

i would recommend that you do his impaction even if you need to wear a mask..
the reason i say this is i had a boar come in last year who had impaction that had never been done before, and the stuff had formed a plug when i finally was able to remove it he had a massive abscess that burst on me removing the stuff,he was on baytril for 2 wks and i had to flush his bum out 4 times a day as the abscess was that bad..
this was because he had never been done,it does smell sooo bad but if it makes you feel that bad buy a mask from the chemist to wear when your doing it,it will defo make Africa feel better and the more you do it the less of a build up you will have so it will be easier on you in the long run..

the last thing you want is him to get an abscess as this and the bayril could prove to much for him,i think if he has been getting pain and there was overly too much creamy secretions, which squirted out then its already poss he has an abscess.which will need antibiotics,i had to drain the rubbish off every day by squeezing the sack, but it didn't at all look like normal secretions which just lubricate the anus these secretion squirted out every where and ran all over the floor.:)>>>

My boyfriend cleaned him out yesterday with my help because I felt sick doing it, so we're going to go halves in a way, I'll do it when he can't see me and he'll do it when he's here. Yesterday a block of poop fell out and about 3-4 small pellets which he ate. I do think he possibly has atheristus *** getting up seems to be a problem now.
