Hello!
I need some help deciding which pellets to feed my piggies. My piggies have had burgess pellets before and they're currently on Harringtions optimum guinea pig pellets. They love both pellets, so it's really just a matter of which brand is better for them.

The reason I switched them to Harringtons was because people had noticed that burgess puts lucerne in their pellets, I didn't know what lucerne was until I asked someone and it turned out to be alfalfa. Me being me I panicked and switched them to a new food

But now I thought I should ask which one is really better for them. And if you also have any other brands that you think would be worth a try:) oxbow would be one I'd try but I can't afford it I've also seen a pellet called Cavia Complete from Versele-Laga and wondered if anyone has seen, tried or used these pellets

Thank you in advance!

I'll be trying Versele soon, and JR grainless. Is the Harringtons wheat free? I know that Burgess has/had wheat in it which is why I'm switching off that one after I use up this bag.

Rosewood seems to be a hit with my lot, don't feed as much either which is good. However I mix different ones together and I have 5 now so couldn't tell you how long a box would last! Apparently it's a month for 2 piggies.

The harringtons pellets contain wheat feed. Should those types of pellets be avoided? Would it be worth a try to see if my pigs would like the rosewood pellets? Where do you buy them, as my pet shop only stocks burgess so I order all my piggie stuff online:) and finally, last question! What price range do the rosewood pellets have☺ thank you!

I used to feed Burgess and my pigs liked them well enough but I decided I wanted to go grain free as well as alfalfa free once they reached adult hood. I tried JRFarm but they wouldn't touch them! I now use Versele Laga Cavia Complete and my girls love them. They're a bit expensive but worth it, I think. I order them from Zooplus.co.uk. I think I get through a two-bag bundle in 6/8 weeks for my three girls.

And I'm always happy to send a sample baggie :-)

Thank you, I'll have a look at zooplus:) what size of bags do they come in? I would love a sample bag! <3

I get mine from Pets Corner (as they always seem to be on offer I think £6?) but I'm sure you can get them online too :)

I personally go wheat free for my animals as my cat was so ill on it. Basically wheat is a cheap filler and not benificial nutritionally particularly for cats & dogs but from my research it also doesn't do much good for piggies either.

I'd say it's worth a try, my piggies love it and it's the first to go out of the mix of pellets I'm currently using up. They prefer it to Burgess, Harringtons and Science Selective which is great! It smells funky but I think that's because it's natural and got herbs and grasses in it, the pigs certainly like the smell! :)

Hmm I'm tempted to switch now! My dogs are on grain free as one of them has a gluten allergy (as well as so many other things) but I didn't even think to see if you could get a grain free piggy food.

I just bought another bag of Burgess so I'll get through that and then have a think. I don't mind paying a bit extra if it's better quality.

Mine have Harringtons which is better than the P@H muck they were on before. When I have finished it I'll have a look around and hope they like what I get.

I feed mine on a mix of the Harringtons and the Burgess Mint, heh. They *really* like the Burgess...not so fond of the Harringtons, but it still gets eaten. If they eat a pellet, I'm inclined to say just let them eat it unless there's a specific dietary reason not to.

Sounds good advice @Lorcan. I have cut down on the amount of pellets mine get anyway. They now have pellets for breakfast only and when the bowl is empty they have hay, hay and more hay until veg time in the evening.

In the past I encouraged mine to eat alf afa king thimathy hay first with veg 2nd and haringtons 3rd, now it is second nature to most of them

If you look to change I recommend mixing it over gradually over the space of a week or two as different ingredients digest at different rates, so I'd get any new stuff before you finish the Burgess :)

Also they seem to notice the change less!

Mine are on Harringtons, which they enjoy. I've tried others, but they've just been wasted. They don't get a lot anyway.

I use pellets only as a treat, that means 5-6 pieces every daily (or nothing). I am using Adults Versele Laga complete because its label is a bit less awful than the other brands I have seen. At least it has no cereals, but there are other things which I don't trust of. Anyway, only few pieces daily will not make damage.
Oxbow's label is not better.
My piggies are growing far from normal doses of pellets and their health is great...
(if you want to understand how "smart" are the firms producing pellets, take a calculator and make a sum of their declared percentages of proteins, fats, fibres and ashes. You will get a number... far from the 100%! because what the firm does not say is the percentage of CARBS... sugars!... which of course are bad for piggies...)

Yeah I had to do that with the awful muesli they were on when I got them. Still have half a bag of that left. Might as well chuck it!

I have made a video all about pellets for guinea pigs hope this helps
