Burgess Guinea Pig census

I’ve done it. Felt like a failure though - “Do you know the difference between feeding hay and bedding hay?” Errr no....,
I thought hay was hay? I can tell good quality hay from bad quality. But never thought there was a “bedding hay” and “feeding hay”🤔
What’s the difference?

I don't think there is really. I'm sure its a marketing ploy to make you buy more. You can hardly say to your piggies "Oi stop eating the bedding hay and only eat the eating hay" now can you?

Basicly feeding hay is higher in fiber. Timothy hay for feeding, meadow for bedding. But its not very important.

I havnt checked if timothy is higher in fiber, i have just read that it is. I really use meadow for bedding because its softer

I also answered that the most common health issue is bladder stones. Probably not true, but its a serious one that i wanted to back up my answer with when i said please make a grain free nugget.Because ss selective isnt found as much as burgess

Thank you! I have to say that the the timothy hay I got from pets at home a few months back was not that nice and they didn’t eat much of it. I now buy big bags of hay from a local pet shop who is supplied by local farms. No label. I have to sift through it to make sure there are no nasty surprises before I give it to the pigs - but they seem to eat much more of this than anything else I’ve tried.

Done! The whole feeding hay is definitely just a marketing ploy. 'Feeding hay' tends to contain a lot of Timothy which is usually more expensive. I'm very allergic to Timothy so all mine have ever eaten is meadow and live long happy lives XD

Survey done! Yes Burgess "feeding hay" is about £5 a kilo, while timothy hay that isnt "feeding" is cheaper. But its a nice treat, the burgess with the marigolds and dandelions!

Done - thanks for highlighting it!

I hope we can very slightly skew the results with some piggy savvy responses to influence decisions by a big player in the market.

I hate to think what they get from their less savvy customer base.

I hope they take the "how much do you spend per year on your piggies" question into account when analysing their responses, because I imagine everyone on the forum spends waaay more than a random sample of pet food shoppers! We must have a market value of millions :)

Just out of interest, what are you alkergic reactions to it. My wife is allergic to something in the house, but its not the pigs because she rubbed her face on them lol, and didnt get a reaction. We are thinking hay but not all

In terms of allergies, I have had about 10 piggies so far. Most have caused no allergic reaction (even though my skin is highly allergic prone and I have asthma) , but some have caused a bad reaction (big red blotches under my chin where my hairy abby decided he wanted to sit for even a few minutes as well as a continuously runny nose) and others have no effect at all.

I don't really know how much I spend on my three. Fortunately their bands were quite wide and I could find out how much I spent last year online on food and treats etc (nearly £250) so I could guess that it was between £250-£500. Dunno how that compares with other people though!
