Burgess spay/ neuter all guinea pigs?

Blimey, I can understand that advice for cats and dogs, but I wouldn't routinely spay sows (although I know some do) because it's such a big op for a piggy :(

As for making the calmer and less aggressive - I wouldn't know, I've never had a spayed sow, but I do know the boys' behaviour isn't affected by neutering!

That is idiotic and self serving. Of course some vets recommend it, they stand to profit.

There is a risk every time anesthesia is used. That risk and the expense makes routine spaying/neutering a bad idea.

There was an uproar in the US not too many years ago when gynecologists started recommending routine hysterectomies for women under all sorts of circumstances. After studies were done, this operation is not recommended as routine any longer.

This is an outstanding thread, it shows that people can think and question and decide what is best for their critters instead of blindly following specious recommendations.

the majority of vet will not spay sows unless their lives are in danger from cysts...

Is there any sane human being who would have an unnecessary major operation?

May I ask has anyone contacted them to ask why/ where they give/get this advice?

I have... I asked who would recommend it, and why they thought this necessary if you have 2 males living together or two females. I asked a few other things too.

Waiting on a reply.

would love to know what they answer back

Rabbits, yes.

Guinea pigs, no!

I can only imagine the line of thought for rabbits was transferred to piggies too.
