I am currently feeding Burgess blackcurrant pellets and they seem to like them, but I've been told I shouldn't be feeding them to my adult pigs as they are an alfalfa based pellet? I was advised Harringtons or Asda pellets were a better choice for the adults?

Sadly most guinea pig pellets contain alfalfa in the uk and even though harringtons does not appear to the ingredients are not exactly healthy plus there is little to no differace between the amount of calcium contained. I dont know what the ingredients of asdas pellets are but have heard that they are similar.

Guinea pigs are prone to developing bladder stones So feeding a pellet that is low in calcium is best.
I feed JR farms Grainless pellets From zooplus as they don't contain alfalfa and have more natural ingredients. :D

I've heard that too about the Burgess blackcurrant nuggets. I've also heard they shouldn't be fed as their regular pellet because of their sugar content.

BUT...I used these nuggets for years for my last three guinea pigs and never had any problems. They were all healthy and lived to ripe old ages of 7-8 years old so I'm not sure.

Despite that though and knowing what I know now, I don't think I would use them as their regular nugget now.

most pellets contain alfalfa and sugar aswell as other unhealthy ingredients unfortunately. so if you are going to feed pellets at all then it's advised to feed a small amount (maximum 1/8 cup per pig per day) or to feed only the pellets which are grain free, sugar free and low calcium - like the bunny, vitakraft or JR ones :)

I feed Excel too, although the mint ones, I feel they may be slightly better as less sugar due to not having fruit in? Again I've always fed them and had no problems, but I do give a limited amount each day :)

I feed the original burgess excel pellets but sometimes mix in a small amount of the blackcurrant and oregano to make it more interesting:yahoo:
