Just woke up to feed the pigs and burnie was hooting, i picked him up and he let out a huge sneeze. It was dry, his nostrils are dry, no eye gunk.

He was then hiccuping like doing body jolts, but it has stopped completely, hes his normal self eating veg as if its going to dissapear. Hope it just dusty hay got clogged up a nostril.

My boy does this occasionally, usually after rooting around in hay. It used to freak me out so much.

keep a close eye on him and perhaps weigh him daily for a few days to be sure. URI's work quickly if they take hold so be alert for any signs (my only experience of a URI was zero symptoms to heavy breathing/heaving sides and crackly breathing in the space of 1-2 hours)

Thanks for the replies, all my pigs have done this before especially sky who never had any uri's so il keep any eye open for it. Burnie jus got neutered fri so stress could trigger a problem. Il see what hes like when I'm back later

Guinea pigs can hoot when they have something stuck up their nose but before I new this, Edward started hooting. I had him straight at the vets who checked him over and he was fine.

Given that Burnie did a big sneeze, he probably just had something irritating his nose but I would keep a close eye on him for now

Yea i thought my the vet told me this too. But it was years ago lol. Burnies nose was all dry so thats good. He went into hiccups aswell but again, all of my pigs have done this. I'm thinking maybe some hay got stuck way down somewhere.

Hes just had his heart rate checked before his neuter, so no worries there

Hope he's OK.
Possibly he was just eating too fast, however if he still causes concern a vet trip wouldn't go amiss.

In 99% of all cases, hooting is a sign of a slightly blocked nose; it usually resolves itself with a big sneeze after a little while. It sounds like he has been eating to greedily with a little food backing into his nose and giving him hiccups. ;)

The much touted connection to heart problem is only worth a consideration if the hooting is persistent over a number of weeks and if there are other pointers towards heart disease. You have mentioned none of them.

Yer wiebke was saying before about the much touted connection being thrown around too much.

He let out a well funny sneeze. They always seem to do it when you pick them up or put them down lol. I had an old boar that hooted on and off for weeks, but he had cancer

Prince did this a few weeks ago for a day or two and I was in panic at first. My past piggy Deedee had heart problems and had the same issue, but with her, she was doing it for a long time. Good thing Prince hasn't had a repeat occurence and is nonstop eating and gaining weight.

Back home now and he is fine😊 i think sky my old 7 year old boar maybe had hooting because of his body slowly shutting down. Wish i could have him back, was a shame he hated dot, because she loved him and he was neutered. Infact dot loves every pig shes met and never even shows any sign of aggression or dominant behaviour
