So a week or two ago piggles went to the vet for an abcs on his chin and the vet gave us some antibiotics to give him and told us to take him back if it came back. So the last couple days I’ve noticed it’s came back and I decided to take him to the vet once he had finished his antibiotic. Time to give him his antibiotics and I notice it’s wet all around hus abscess and the abscess has shrunken. It must’ve burst sometime today, I’ve been out all day. Just wondering what to do, I don’t really have any like bandages or anything like that, so I’m wondering what to clean it with, would salt water do, and should I squeeze any remaining puss out? Pls reply ASAP i don’t know what to do lol

Try to get an appointment with the vet. In the meantime I think cleaning with saline is okay.
Thankyou, will salt water work, I don’t have any saline atm? Will try get him in ASAP but it’s a bit hard atm I have a lot of stuff going on personally

You can make your own saline solution, dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt into 250ml cooled boiled water.
Thankyou so much! No need for me to drain it? Its like midnight where I am lol of course this had to happen when I just wanted to go to bed

I'm not a health expert so I don't like to advise on draining it. I would wipe away anything that is coming away and try to flush it a bit. If you have a 1ml syringe (without needle) you could flush some of the saline into the hole. If it were my pig I would very gently press round the edges to get some of the puss out but not squeeze hard in case I spread it further inside. Try to see the vet in the morning or at least speak on the phone for some advise on how they want you to deal with it.
These things do tend to happen at the most awkward times.

Thankyou so so much you’ve been so helpful, just waiting on my salt water to cool. I’ll just give it a little squeeze and see if I can call the vet some stage tomorrow, I won’t be able to get in though I’m busy. Thank you so so much again, you have been amazing

I don’t know about draining it. I would just wipe away anything that comes out and call the vet soon as they open.

Hi!

You can find the recipe for home made saline solution in our first aid kit information thread as well as in our one-stop emergency care guide at the top of the Health/Illness section. Sterile saline from a pharmacy will also do; maybe get some next time you go shopping so you have it handy:
First Aid Kit: Easily available non-medication support products for an emergency
Emergency, Crisis and Bridging Care until a Vet Appointment

Both links are worth bookmarking. Please book an appointment for as soon as possible. Your piggy needs an antibiotic. Problems have a bad habit of happening at the most inconvenient time possible, unfortunately.

Oh no, not Jasper’s twin! Bless him, hope you can get an appt in the morning. Blooming abscesses! :mal: I used salt water for a year cleaning my Pedro’s eye socket after the abscess behind his eye burst, just as good as saline to clean the nasties! Hope his appt goes well x
