hi every1,my 3.5 year old guineapig starting loosing weight a while bk,not much, but enough for us to notice. The vet found that she had a lump in her abdomen and gave us the option to operate or not,he couldnt say if it was a cyst or cancer until he did. This was a really tough decision as she still seemed well in herself and was drinking and eating fine. But we decided to go ahead as he advised we should if we wanted to keep her.Today was the day of the op as the vet examined her again he accidently burst it using his fingers and its gone,he said she didnt need any antibiotics either. He did say to keep an eye incase it was filled with blood as she could get blood poisoning and die.Its been 8 hrs and shes bk to her normal self. But I'm still really worried that shes not out of the woods yet.Anyone had a similar thing happen?:(

Welcome to the forum Princess.

It sounds like she had ovarian cysts; these can burst on their own - and as you discovered, especially so when they are quite large and put under pressure.

From what I understand, the bursting of such cysts is harmless and the fluid contained in them is absorbed by the body, no ill effects.

Has she had any symptoms other than the cysts and weight loss? Hormonal behaviour (rumbling, mounting) and hair loss is common with ovarian cysts; enlarged nipples is also a frequent sign. In cases where ovarian cysts are diagnosed, a spay is not the only option - it's actually the least favourable option as it's invasive surgery. Hormone injections and draining the cysts via needle are generally considered the preferable treatments.

thanks for the reply, thats really helpful.
No not really shes a really placid guineapig and we hadnt noticed any chance in her behaviour at all,she is a long haired guineapig and her hair does seem to be thinner.
Thanks for the info.
