I have two female pigs, one is about one and the other a year and a half and i'd like to get a baby. I went to buy one at pets at home but they wouldn't let me just get one as they said my pigs might bully it and she'd have to live alone if that happened. If introduced to each other properly and gradually I don't think there will be a problem as they have lived with a baby before (but she died after a few weeks). What are other people's views on this? Am I being selfish by just wanting to get one or is the shop being overcautious? x

You are intending to buy a male I assume :(
We are a rescue forum - there are hundreds and hundreds of unwanted and lonely piggies out there without adding to the population !
A male will certainly provide you with babies from both girls but then the girls may have boys so what will you do then ? Do you have room to split the litters at three weeks from mum, where will you put dad etc. etc.
Please think again, you will have no history on any males and how do you know your girls do not have any roan genes- could reproduce lethals so steer away from breeding I beg ?/

GO RESCUE !
Oh gosh, it gets worse...just noted your girls are past the safe age for littering as well. Stick around on here, you will learn lots of great things about guinea pigs.

No, i'm looking to get another girl. It was a rescue one I had seen in pets at home, in the adoption bit.

I think it depends on the personality of your pigs, and if they've lived as part of a trio before they might well get on fine with a newbie.

Even if they didn't, the baby wouldn't be condemned to live alone - there are plenty of rescues that pair up lonely single pigs so that they can live with a friend.

Maybe you might be better off going down the rescue route to find a baby female for your girls? :))

I think the closest recommended rescues to you are Millhaven http://www.milhaven-rescue.com/ and BARC http://barnsleyanimalrescue.org/

You could also try your local RSPCA.

The benefits of getting a pig from a reputable rescue is that they will be healthy, guaranteed correctly sexed, and not pregnant! You can also discuss bonding with them, as a lot of places offer a bonding service to ensure a good partnership.

Please don't think that rescues only have older piggies; a lot of pigs that end up in rescue are under 12 months old, and most rescues even have babies born there!

Hope that helps

Hi! Please be aware that trios are the most difficult constellation to get just right without ending up with some kind of outsider problem sooner or later.

If you can afford it, you'd rather go from two to four piggies instead! Introducing a couple of bonded younger girls will mean that they will have each other to fall back on. If not, you may consider getting a neutered boar instead - if your girls can date him at a rescue to see whether they accept/like him, the better! A boar has to get on with both sows.

Please consider rescue - you will get guaranteed not pregnant, healthy and properly sexed piggies. Sows coming into rescue are not seldom pregnant, so there are often rescue born youngsters or a mummy-daughter pair around.

Depending on where you are in Manchester, there is the Potteries rescue in Stoke, not far off jct 16 on the m6 - you could take your girls there and they can choose a new friend for themselves.
Would you also be looking to get a bigger cage too?

Please consider going to a rescue....I took my Miss Mabel to a local rescue for piggy dating....and brought home Doodle-Pig! (it did take a few tries to find a piggie that MM would get on with, so it's good to have someone who knows about bonding to do this). xx
