Buying Hay

Well, they do now lol. Oops. Never mind.

I used to only buy Burgess hay but price aside I really haven't been happy with it for the last few bags. I bought the 10 bales from Nature's Own, and you can only buy direct from them in bundles of 5, I guess to make shipping more economical. The bags are only 750g each and I'm sure some of them aren't filled as well as others, but the boys love the 5 a Day hay from them and when you're buying 10 at once those things even out, I guess?

My girls really liked that, but buying them in bulk has put me off recently as I have no space. I can't remember where or how but I've definitely just bought 2 from somewhere before :hmm:

Amazon will sell them in smaller amounts but I don't like buying them off Amazon tbh, it comes from a third party seller and the delivery service they use isn't great. Nature's Own themselves use Parcelforce who will send a delivery date and timeslot, and I have Amazon Prime so buying direct from Amazon is usually safe.

Yea I prefer to buy direct, just don't have the space atm. Drowning in piggy stuff :))

Yeah I dunno why I bought 10 bags lol, thankfully they're all in a spare cupboard nobody else is going to look in :)) gotta say though, aside from the distinct lack of seed heads, it looks and smells delicious and I'm not even a guinea pig!

Update: The sample from hay and straw has arrived. You get a little bag stuffed compactly of each meadow, timothy and rye and ings hay. The ings looks the nicest, very green with nice long stems and some leafier grass pieces, looks like the burgess but with fewer seed heads. The meadow is the next best, a lot more yellowy but still a lot of green with quite a few seed heads. The timothy looks the worst, it is mainly thick stalky pieces and very little green, lots of thin brown pieces.

I will try them on the meadow tonight and get back to you x

Okay, so now I have a problem! All three hays are of excellent quality and I can't decide which one to buy the large amount of for staple hay. The timothy actually has a lot of green inside but is still the most yellow yet has a lot of seed heads which my boys love. Which out of meadow, timothy and rye and ings is the best as a staple everyday hay?

And I have tried them all! x

I ordered a 15kg bale from Zooplus this morning, whilst the herd is only half way through their current 10kg bag of Timothy hay.

I get them the 5 a day hay from Pethut when I go there, but with 7 piggies the bags don't last very long.

I buy my hay from Timothy Hay | Hay Supplies UK

I used to do the same as you and I ended up spending half my wages on small hay bags! I find this so much easier- they do big bales and if you want a sample you can send them an email with your address. They hay is really good and low dust- I would highly recommend.

Thanks to everyone who replied, I am going to get the ings hay from hay and straw. How long do you think 4.5 kg would last 2 pigs if they have it 24/7?

10 kg bag lasts me a week, with 20 piggies !I do use farm meadow hay for using on the floor, and piles in there kitchen area.

So it'll last about a month. I might get the 9.5 kg one then, not sure x

Does anyone use or have used nature's own? They seem very good value and I'm just trying to find the negatives! Buying is in bulk of 5 x 4kg but still seems very good... xl hay.. sweet green hay and 5 a day hay.

My boys love the 5 a day hay. Comet especially, whether it's eating, sleeping, or playing hide and seek.

I got the 9.5kg ings and the piggies eat it all up in no time! It smells really fresh too. x

*Update*
Just bought my second bag of ings hay from hay and straw so the 9.5kg bag lasts about 4 months for 2 piggies with a constant supply! It costs £18. The bag I just got is really nice and I'm happy to see there are no more random twigs and leaves and there are more seed heads. :)

hi, okay so ive read all this and as ive only owned my piggies for a week have no idea about the different types of hay, at the moment they are eating hay from pets at home but when the bag runs out id like to try something else, what should i go for as a first bag to try them on?

You should order the sample pack of three from hay and straw and see what your piggies like best.

I've had mine over a year now and still asking that very question .... some are good but then you get a bad batch and it puts you off. I think it seems the on line bought ones that cost a little more seem to go down better... like others I find pets at home a very hit and miss ... having returned a few bags now. Good luck
