In Switzerland , guinea pigs (amongst others such as budgies and goldfish) have been identified as a "social species" that are protected by law. That is, in Switzerland, a person cannot own a single guinea pig, by law you must have two! Yay for the Swiss! In the city in which I reside in Canada, any dwelling is limited to no more than TWO animals (not relevant to dogs and fish). So, being that I have SIX guinea pigs, I suppose I am breaking the by law. *sigh* This by law is in effect for good reasons, I understand that...but knowing that guinea pigs ARE social animals and that it is CRUEL to keep just one... there would be no hope for myself or any of my children to care for another pet such as a lizard, cat or budgie in our home as long as the TWO guinea pigs reside within. mallethead

Thoughts?

They were going to have a by law in our neighbouring council.......two only piggies per household......so a little girl of 10 wrote to the council and asked..... who should i give up in my little family of 3 ?
They're now NOT going to do the new by law.... YAY!

HECK..... i think it's a bit sad that only two animals..... does this also mean for fishies too? mallethead

Fish are excluded, thankfully as we have a 4 year old Betta! Oddly enough, one can have up to 60 banded racing pigeons throughout the months of April -July in my municipality. I swear these laws are created and maintained by bafoons!

The other months, one is only permitted to keep 40. Hahahaha! It makes no sense to me at all. I began looking into the animal by laws initially just out of curiosity as a good friend of mine is looking to re-home her 3 year old pug. She has recently moved and is now only able to keep 3/4 of her dogs due to the by laws of the town where she now lives. How heartbreaking!

That is just totally ridiculous!
So i suppose people hide the rest of their pigeons then?

Oh how sad for your friend 8... I hope she found a lovely forever home for the other pup

Sometimes laws/by laws are made without really thinking things thru :(

When my ex and I bought our first flat there was a clause in the missives that said we couldn't keep any livestock (as if I'm going to have a cow in my flat), pidgeons, rabbits and guinea pigs!

There is always a reason that couples split up, and mine must have been so that I could have my to lovely piggies x)x)x)
