Well I really didnt imagine writing in the rainbow bridge section so soon :( And least of all for DT. We thought after her ovarian cyst operation that she was on the mend. Her weight was back up, she had come out of her shell as she helped Leeland get over her own op.. and she really looked to have made us all proud.

Then last Friday she started panting and her tummy had swollen. I took her to the vets at the bottom of the road incase it was a URI, they gave baytril. Then Monday when Leeland was having her post op cehck up I mentioned it to Alan who gave her a quick scan which showed large gas build ups. So we regularly gave her infacol and emeprid over night and waited till the morning. I came home from a night shift so didnt get a proper look at her until 1pm! But she looked like her breathing had slowed and her eyes were closing.. So I whipped her back to see Alan who at first thought maybe she was doing better.. but realised it was wishful thinking and we put her under GA to have an X-ray. He saw fluid in her gut and lots so he operated immediately to save the organs the immense pressure.. When he opened her up he said he found a mucosal haemmorhagic enteropathy - blood and mucous everywhere, it started coming out of her mouth and nose and they new she wasnt going to pull through even if they did find the source.

So they gave me a moment to say goodbye, gave her the injection (very sweetly I might add) and let me stay with her until I was done. We discussed options but when I said burial they seemed a little at a stump as to what action I could take next (I dont have a garden!).

Anyway, I'm home now with Leeland on my lap. She hasn't tried to call for DT yet but seems quite distracted. I'm nervous about leaving her on her own tonight as I am meant to be in work. I might go in late.

So sad that we didn't see it. Despite all our scans she changed on a daily basis! Miss you already little lady.. I do hope you'll *stick around* and help Lee and I get Leeland back into shape!

thanks guys... just plucking up the courage to get in the car and try go to work. It's a night shift until 5.30am and I work with a bunch of callous 40yr old men who always make jokes about how to kill off a sick guineapig. :( Just tempted not to go.

Aww no, I am so very sorry to hear this :0 I remember DT having her operation around the same time that my Ellie was having hers.

I'd ring in sick. Callous work colleagues making sarcastic remarks is the last thing you need :(

Sleep peacefully DT x

Oh no. How awful. I am so sorry for your loss. Do not go into work. You have had a shock and need to be at home.

Absolutely gutted for you, so very sorry for your loss. Massive hugs, hope Leeland and you are ok. X x

RIP DT

Thanks guys so very much! I'm not sure how I'm feeling I suppose. If I stay at home I'm just going to bumble around.. and check on Leeland. And my work pattern means that I have the next 6 days off (exc sat.). Plus every morning the micro samples need to be arranged to be sent so if I don't do them the next person in has to do loads and really quick.

I'd feel really bad.

If I don't feel like staying I can just go home I guess.... :/

I'll let my shift manager know that if any of the boys take the magic 'p' I'll head straight home.

Leeland is really quiet, and keeps moving to check if the wooden house is still empty. How do I take her mind off of it? She's never been apart from DT this long.

Take care at work x

Piggies grieve exactly like we do, she will probably be quiet for the next few days.
When one of our piggies lost her sister, we made sure her cage was moved into the same room as us, so she had company. It may be worth leaving the radio on when you go out so she hears voices.
Leeland will know that DT has left and will be quiet, but she will come through it, piggies get on with surviving. So sorry again, my heart goes out to you x x

Thanks sportsbilly, I've had guineas at a younger age and remember when they passed, but I wasn't aware of dating and the difficulties of bonding so headed straight to the rspca to find a cage mate! Luckily the gorgeous little huspig I found back then was a real gentleman for my shy lady so they were perfect.

But Leeland is a mixed bag, normally she's really chirpy and bubbly and curious. Since her sickness she's been really cautious nervous and .. what feels like resentful! ( she's been syringe fed for nearly a month) and still fights it.

I've got no idea whether to bond her until she's got the all clear (could take months), or whether her loneliness will slow down her progress and make her more depressed. I dont want to risk her being bullied whilst she's so underweight.

Whee are so sorry to hear about gorgeous DT 8...8...8...
